Agadir Quake Toll Exceeds Three Thousand Confirmed

Stunned survivors fled quake ravaged Agadir as international aid mobilizes. Red Cross officials estimate over 3,000 dead and more than 5,000 injured, with a new toll far higher than Moroccan government figures. City to Buy Park Site in Sherwood Subdivision

City council on Tuesday evening voted to purchase up to 80 acres in the Sherwood Park subdivision west of here as a site for a future park. Land from Don Shaw at 2400 dollars per acre will be paid from the park site acquisition fund. The site will reach 13th Street northwest near 28th Avenue.

Three Colorado highway deaths raise state toll

The Colorado road toll climbed to 56 for the year with three more deaths blamed on storm conditions. Victims include Harry Fishman 64 of Denver Cheri Ann Taylor 2 of Crook and Albert Marlies 24 with Antonio N Sanchez 46 of Del Norte. Police report a red light violation and vehicle overturns on county roads and U S highways.

Three Downtown Bus Stop Changes Approved by City

City council approved moving two downtown bus stops on 6th Ave to better space for pullouts and eliminating the stop at the south side of Greeley National Bank. Stops near Jobh SL and Woolworth are relocated to front of Greeley Gas Co and Adams Drug Store corner respectively. A bench at 942 Sth Ave for a Bus Presenters was denied as the Steele shop stop is moved.

Train Oil Tanker Crash Fatal to 14 in California

A Santa Fe passenger train collided with a two trailer oil rig near Bakersfield at night, causing a massive explosion. By dawn 14 were dead and 65 injured. 11 cars derailed, four diesel units burned, and track damaged. Survivors and witnesses described chaotic scenes as ambulances ferried the injured to Bakersfield hospitals.

Snow Deepens Across County as Temperatures Plummet

Snow blankets the county with two to six inches as temperatures hover near zero. Greeley reports four inches with moisture around .24 inches while roads stay slick. Schools report bus routes normal though a few mechanical issues cited. Partly cloudy outlook with a slight warm-up expected midweek.

City Council Approves 40500 Budget Increase

Greeley council on first reading approved an ordinance adding 40500 to city appropriations this year. Of the total 30000 goes to general fund with 12000 for bus system operation repaid from bus revenues, plus 4000 for a metal truck shelter and 8000 for property purchases, and 4000 for public safety equipment. An 8500 maintenance fund covers the bus purchase, and 4600 supports a utility fund for Bellvue filter-plant work and minor water dept expenses.

Buell La Grange Annexation Clears Committee Nod

Weld County school planning committee approved dissolving Fuell and La Grange districts and annexing their areas to Balan pending state education commission consent. No objections at a public hearing. An 46 acre La Grange parcel was moved to Greely and minor land adjustments near Bracewell La Salle Beebe Draw were placed with adjoining districts. Also approved was annexing 11/8 stations at the extreme last of Kiowa to Wiggins in Morgan County.

Rioting Students Disperse as Eisenhower Arrives in Uruguay

President Eisenhower arrived in Montevideo amid student demonstrations against Yankee imperialism. Tear gas and fire hoses were used. one man shot in the foot and several injured. Police clashed with students near the University of Montevideo and the Architecture School. Guards and artillery were positioned around the university as banners denounced U.S. policy.

Heath Addition Bids Accepted By Greeley School Board

The Heath junior high addition bids totaled 302 518 with 244 708 on the general contract won by Mensel Phelps Construction Co. of Greeley and 58 110 on the mechanical contract won by McGarry Johnson Inc. of Denver. The board discussed a local bid preference and approved plans for Maplewood and Jackson additions as part of the district building program.

Durango Family Escapes Injury in Bakersfield Train Crash

A Durango mother Mrs G Michael Hogan aged 28 and her four children Daniel 1 Steven 25 Sharon 3 and Mary Beth 4 escaped injury when a Santa Fe passenger train and truck collision occurred Tuesday night in Bakersfield. They were en route to Gallup New Mexico to visit Hogan’s wife’s family and were returning from Stockton California where they visited Mrs Hogan’s parents Mr and Mrs Austin Mahoney.

No Parking Downtown On 16th Street After Snow Clearing
