Irrigation Comes To Greeley With Early Ditch System
In April 1870 settlers in Greeley faced irrigation needs and built the Garden Ditch, a 10 mile 15 inch deep 8 foot wide canal carrying 2,500 inches of water to irrigate about 5,000 acres including townsite. The Union Colony Pioneer Society marks June 10 for its water law anniversary. A headgate sign warned against meddling with the water source.
