Service Says Purported Secret Facts Had Been Published in New York Paper Before He Told About Them
Washington reports describe diplomat John Service testifying at a Senate hearing that material he discussed with journalist Mark Gagen had appeared in the New York Times months earlier. He argued the facts were public and that background information to writers was part of his State Department duties. The Amerasia raid and prosecutions are referenced, with charges of Communist collaboration disputed by Service and noted amid broader McCarthy era inquiries. The hearing, initially planned as closed, was opened at Service's request, drawing attention to the case and related investigations.
