Hailstorms Hit Weld County Farms Across the District

A pair of severe hailstorms struck Weld County causing heavy damage to crops near Nunn and Fort Lupton. Beets, wheat, corn, onions and alfalfa suffered varying losses as rain totals ranged from half an inch to three quarters of an inch. Local sugar beet districts reported acreages damaged with up to 200 acres affected in Fort Lupton Brighton area.

72 Missing In Ship Blast in the Red Sea

In the Red Sea off Suez, the British freighter Indian Enterprise exploded killing 71 crew and one survivor was rescued. The ship, en route from Helmand to Indian ports, carried explosives for the Indian government. A Norwegian tanker found the sole survivor who was picked up during night searches.

Four Die In Plane Crash Near Lebanon in June

A small single-engine plane wrecked seven miles south of town killed four aboard. Identified were Robert A. Luke, 41, Tutayette, Tad.. Clinton E. Ferguson, 44, Battle Ground, Ind.. Marcia Ferguson, 41, and Ronald Partridge B., 00, with Ferguson reported as the flying instructor. The crash occurred as the aircraft plunged into the ground, the stake buried two feet deep.

Senate Approves Social Security Base Change

Lawmakers approved an increase in the Social Security wage base, with a vote of 46 to 48 against a broader proposal. The change would raise the base to 3,000 dollars, adding about 548 dollars annually in retirement benefits through higher payroll deductions.

Hurley Asked to Testify Again on State Dept Allegations

Senate investigators moved to compel Ay Hurley to elaborate on charges that State Department officials aided or gave top secret documents to pro-Communists. Hurley linked the matter to a 1945 theft case and named John S. Service as alleged recipient of secret information. Colorado and Wyoming forests are perilously dry with officials warning of extreme fire danger. A veteran ranger and a U.S. Forest Service fire control officer in Denver say conditions are unprecedented and ready to spark at a single spark or lightning strike. Fliers Light Boat in Colorado River Canon

An airplane searched the Colorado River canyon near Grand Canyon Arizona for a five man expedition after their boat capsized in the canyon. Pilot Hob Manning reported the survivors still in the canyon and expected to reach Pierce’s Ferry by six.

AT&T Signs Long Lines CIO Labor Contract

New York July 20. The Long Lines department of the American Telephone and Telegraph Co and Division 10 CIO Communications Workers of America announced a wage agreement. If ratified it will affect 20 000 members in 49 states. It shortens the wage progression schedule so workers reach the top pay in six and a half years instead of eight. Governors Conference trip amid storms and delays
