Enlistment bonus fails to draw men for ground combat units
Washington AP reports that May enlistments for Army and Marine ground combat arms fell short of goals. Only about 1,534 volunteers joined combat roles, roughly 900 below combined targets. Navy recruitment for such units was extremely low, while the Pentagon expanded bonuses to 2,500 for May and June, with potential 3,000 cap and extended congressionally.
