Atlanta Babies Die From Mysterious Spinal Ailment
ATLANTA AP A mysterious spinal cord disease has caused the deaths of six babies in Atlanta during Aug 1 to Oct 2, 1962. Dr. Marvin Boris and three Atlanta physicians described the outbreak in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Affected infants were born with a balloon like sac at the base of the spine, visible without X ray, with early signs including loss of lower limb function and urinary control failure. Deaths stemmed from spinal base infection causing meningitis or blocked spinal fluid flow leading to hydrocephalus.
