Trapped men aboard the Thetis were believed suffocated after the submarine dived off Great Ormes Head. Salvage teams struggled to raise the hull as officials cited limited chances of saving any remaining crew.
Commencement exercises for 622 men who have received degrees or completed certificates at Colorado State College will be held on the North Campus Friday June 9 at 10 90 am. Of the total 622, 220 completed requirements during winter or spring terms. 402 completed elsewhere. 23 receive MA or Mepre, 130 become Bachelors of arts, 6 earn certificates. The June 9 ceremony is the college's 50th anniversary commencement. Home towns of 220 graduates are listed in the continuation on Page 4.
Denver June 3 state supreme court ordered a 60 day delay in the execution of Willie Day Mundy and related stays for Coates and Mundy while appeals and new counsel preparation proceed. Judge Johnson issued stays and the court considers vacating sentences for others on death row as juror misconduct investigations unfold.
Greeley police held Paul Gojarti 22 and Homer Eouples 27 of Canon City after three local youths reported threats while demanding cabbage wages. Witnesses said men used a rifle and forced workers to continue, while the car driver aided the intimidation on a farm near Lucerne. Other youths named were Eddy Yates Charles Jones Jack Lee.
Dan Moran of Continental leading a 45-member inspection party visited Greeley to review the companys bulk distributing plants and gas stations along North Eighth Avenue. The tour covers 500 million dollars across 20 states as officials check maintenance, engineering, and operations at each unit.
Arthur Atterdan of Mead Feliday reported 20 turkey poults stolen over the last month, with several taken at a time. Authorities note the thefts occurred in Mead Feliday area during afternoons.
Mrs. Albert Darken of Riverside learned her son Albert Durkee Jr a former GreenWise resident was killed in an automobile crash in Kangar City Massachusetts He lived in Greenley with his family for many years and graduated from Greenley High School in 1922 He is survived by his wife and six year old son his parents in Greenley and Mr Burke Jn well kinwe and Mrs Henry igo and Mrs T G Williams attended the funeral
Weld County Red Cross chapter annual meeting praised Weld County as having best equipped first aid stations and well trained staff. L P Branco, national field worker, commended the county. Mrs R W Gelder reported the remark. Myra Gelder introduced Mrs Feri Carpenter who trained many first aid workers. Officers reelected. committees formed for the new year. Meeting drew about 40 people. brief program and refreshments followed.
Robert Martin, 65, longtime Greeley businessman, died suddenly of a heart attack after noon Saturday. He had recently arrived from California and Albuquerque with his wife Pearl Knnbrel to visit friends, planned to travel to Estes Park. He operated the Economy store in Greeley and owned properties in Greeley and Albuquerque. Survivors include his widow, two children, three stepchildren, and many relatives. he was taken to Mountain Mortuary.
In a terse statement Nelson A. Porter, assistant clerk, announced Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, age 77, is experiencing serious illness and must rest completely for an extended period. The press note said there is no immediate danger and urged rest for recovery.
Park Church hosts a Children’s Day program Sunday morning with exercises by the craft, kindergarten, primary and junior departments. A program book and flowers will be displayed as teachers conduct the orderly events and the children look forward to the morning worship.
Rep Gaffer of Washington requests Major General George Van Horn Moseley be court martialed for alleged insubordination and subversive remarks linked to anti communistic activity. The White House acknowledges receipt and notes the letter was sent to Secretary Woodring, with the War Department handling the matter.
The Greeley Chamber of Commerce offers five dollars for a best name for a summer welcome party for Greeley merchants, town folks, OSCE students and families. The event features buffalo barbecue, contests, entertainment by local stars, and a mountain trip welcome, with entries due by June 10.

An elderly man reported his automobile stolen by a hitchhiker who assaulted him and fled. Denver police recovered the car on a street in the city. The alleged suspect, a man named Rot Heron, faced an arrest warrant and was later released after questioning.
