Greeley Independence Stampede Grows Under Chamber Direction
Since 1923 volunteers have built the Greeley Independence Stampede into a major Fourth of July event. An 11 member committee led by Dave Freemyer plans a year round program with new activities such as a free watermelon feed and a cowboy golf tournament. In 1972 about 17,000 attended the rodeo with $30,000 in prize money and $50,000 in gate receipts. The event draws 10,000 visitors to two night shows and each tourist spends about $34 daily.
