U S Legislation Would Protect Consumers From Hazardous Home Goods
A House committee advanced a five member, presidentially appointed consumer safety commission bill to regulate household products. It would shift hazard control from HEW to a new commission, set mandatory safety standards, allow recalls, and impose fines up to 50 000 and prison up to one year for violations. The bill excludes foods drugs cosmetics motor vehicles pesticides and certain other items. It seeks to reduce deaths and injuries from consumer products through stronger product safety oversight.
