Sey F and GeNsen were bound over to the district court after a preliminary hearing. The case involves allegations brought by the boys’ families and local officials. Proceedings focused on establishing probable cause for trial.
Sheriff McAfee recovers a broken rifle during the trip to Harry Jacobson’s home as Theodore Lakender and Walter Jensen face larceny and burglary charges. Jensen bound over to district court, bond set at $500, with much evidence linked to earlier be theft. Jacobson implicated. rifle traced and recovered. several others to be arraigned this week in a packed courtroom.
De G. Be Sutphen leaves his home and will spend several weeks with his West Virginia family as part of a lengthy visit.
The Spuds face the Sioux Indian team tomorrow with their strongest lineup of the season. Ryan at shortstop and four top pitchers are slated to start, promising a standout baseball display. Spuds infielders Wiedensaal LaSalle Haller and outfielders Mitchell Miller Huckles, plus Watson catching, complete the lineup.
Weld county farmers report a strong season for fruits with cherry crops of about 50 bushels at N B Williams ranch in Delta and others promising sizable yields. Tobias Mattox near the city grows cherries toward 150 bushels and adds grapes plums apples peaches pears and apricots to the mix. Birds reduce pears but overall prospects remain favorable across the orchards and city trees including Prof Hays in Greeley with peach and apple crops.
Washington reports the senate passed a far reaching pre election publicity measure. It caps campaign spending per candidate at ten cents per voter and sets totals of ten thousand dollars for senators and five thousand for house campaigns. Public disclosure of contributions and expenditures begins fifteen days before Election Day with six day publication intervals. It also requires all promises of political jobs to be disclosed as part of the record.
Rev Gustafson, pastor of the Swedish church, was surprised by about 70 congregants at his home 1808 Eleventh Avenue for the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary. A dining room table and other presents were given to the pastor and his wife.
Jerry Elliott has purchased the Greeley Auto Co. garage from F. H. Badger. The sale was consummated this morning and Elliott will take possession at once.
Travelers are invited to Manitou excursions with Tribune readers next Sunday at a modest price. They will enjoy a noon arrival and five thirty departure, or connect via Colorado Springs to board the Santa Fe train at six thirty. The piece extols Manitou’s scenic beauty and Healthful climate, calling Colorado “The Playground of the Nation.”
The city council voted to enforce the old curfew ordinance requiring youths under 17 to be home by 9 PM in summer and 8 PM in winter unless with a parent. Violations lead to being sent home and possible court fines. The meeting also discussed street-use rules, driving licenses for under 16 and automobile licensing, plus plans to place a bell tower on city hall and other municipal matters.
The 18 inch solid sterling loving cup, awarded to the Commercial club furnishing the best agricultural exhibit, has arrived in Greeley. The cup will be lent to clubs in Weld county in application order so communities may view it. The fair association has allocated several thousand dollars in premiums for top exhibitors and is mailing premium lists countywide.
Frank Gibson the night clerk at the post office leaves this morning for a two weeks outing at Glen Haven officials report.
Mrs. Elsie DeVine leaves today for Ault to visit her son Chester DeVine and his family.
Elmer Rueh and Walter Rover, from Cincinnati Ohio, arrived in the city yesterday afternoon from Denver and plan to walk to San Francisco arriving around September 1. They began June 1 and travel on foot except when offered a ride, carry a tent and pocket kitchen, and rest due to new shoes. Dr. Allen gave them a lift to town and they plan to follow the northern coast trail through Wyoming.
Miss May Saunders and T. H. McCutcheon were married last evening in Pierce. The bride is the daughter of W H Saunders a wealthy land owner. The groom a Baton business man plans to reside in Colorado Springs where his business thrives.
Miss Winifred Dunn of Camfield visited the home of Mrs. Prank Catying last week.
The Weld County Fair association closed a contract with Lynn Mathewson for two airship flights at the county fair. The flights are set for Wednesday and Friday, September 20 and 22, with the airship displayed in a tent on the grounds and explained by an expert. Admission to see the airship is free, despite usual 25 cent charges for flights elsewhere.
Under Sheriff Fred Williams studies ornithology as a vocation and fills his garden with birds. A dozen varieties visit a kitchen window feeder, including robins finches orioles sparrows meadow larks mocking birds woodpeckers bluebirds and camp robbers. The birds’ morning chorus guides his routine.
Dr Keyes, leading advocate of industrial education, lectures at Teachers College asserting both classical and vocational systems will be taught in top schools. He argues trade schools attract willing learners and will raise standards in Latin German French and other languages through better teaching.
John Olguin and Peter Sisnero of Olney Springs Colorado visited Northern Colorado last week with intent to buy land. They toured Loveland Fort Collins Eaton Greeley and Platteville with John C Archuleta and returned to Denver last Saturday. They were very favorably impressed with the country visited.
At Pike's Peak Colorado Springs July 19 experts from Oxford and Yale led by Dr J A Haldane and Gordon Douglas undergo controlled high altitude experiments under Yale Dr Henderson and Miss Mabel Fitzgerald as they test atmospheric pressure effects. The study includes an air tight chamber to measure endurance at extreme pressures and aims to define the limits of human survival above and below sea level. The work began last week and will continue five more weeks.
Sterling July 19 John Corbin 24 son of a wealthy Kelly merchant is jailed in West Union Ia on perjury and abduction charges. His 12 year old bride Faye Gne daughter of Mrs Bun yan Kelly left with him when prosecution threatened. Joseph Fennell 18 Kelly is arrested for aiding and abetting. Eloped couple Arvilla Corbin 15 and Fennell wed July 10 in Akron Washington county. Justice A C Stratton may lose office after district attorney action considered.
A group of councilmen police and a newspaper man rushed in drizzle toward a church after a distressed caller claimed a burglar was in her cellar. They searched the tent and church but found no intruder, only stored jam and preserves.
