A two building blaze in Platteville destroyed the Home bakery and the adjacent printing office of the Platteville News. Mrs. Roger Royer awakened, aiding neighbors who moved contents to the street before total loss. The brick adjoining was saved by a bucket brigade. Losses were estimated at 1000 for the bakery with 250 insurance and 750 for the printing office insured for 500.
Mrs John Cable of Windsor, holding a rifle, killed a large porcupine with the first shot while camping with a party. The event caused amusement after a Denver paper claimed she killed a bear, though observers clarified it was a porcupine.
Mrs BE A Warren and her children from Hereford Wyoming visited Greeley and will relocate to Alma Colorado to make their home.
The Fisher Shipp Concert company touring for chautauqua and lyceum work travels across the United States. They recall a near overturn in an irrigation ditch near Scott's Bluff, have performed in Stillwater prison and Norristown asylum, and enjoy Greeley during a Pleasant Valley excursion. Miss Shipp and Miss Shipp’s colleagues travel ten and a half months yearly.
Toronto reports hundreds dead and millions in damage from yesterday’s fires in the Porcupine district. Only three of the West Dome mine employees are accounted for, while 200 miners and workers in the Dome mine have been suffocated. Dozens of mine camps and superstructures including Dome North Dome Preston East Dome Vipond Foley O’Brien Philadelphia United Porcupine Eldorado Porcupine Standard Imperial West Dome and Success burned.
Grand Junction July 13. J Williams a pumpman on the Rio Grande Western and his wife and three young daughters were burned to death in a gasoline explosion at Ruby twenty three miles west of Grand Junction. Two children died from burns and were found with skulls and leg bones exposed. The third child died after arrival at St Marys hospital as the family was rushed there. The parents died within about half an hour of each other near 10:30 last night.
The Tribune announces a northern Colorado Pike's Peak trip for $6.50 round trip on Sunday July 23. Two lines combine at Utah Junction then travel via Denver Laramie and Colorado & Southern to Manitou with a nine mile cog railway climb to 14 147 feet. Stops at Colorado Springs or Manitou available for $3.50 round trip. excursion includes a full half day to sightsee.
Sheriff McAfee and deputies pursue a wide ranging burglary case in Greeley. They are examining six months of reported crimes and gathering evidence before arresting a possible larger gang of petty burglars. Additional arrests are expected as investigations continue.
Homesteaders report two to three complaints daily to M. D. McEntry in Denver about cattle roaming on public domain. Over 200 complaints in three months ask for relief. McEntry says remedy lies in state courts and many cannot afford fences. The issue pits federal grazing rules against state fencing statutes and questions possible damages.
An Eaton elderly resident Tom Duke is reported in very serious condition today with the attending physician losing hopes for his recovery.
Frank P. Matthews advertising manager of the Tribune and his wife plan a Saturday departure for the upper Poudre to spend two weeks at the Park cottage at Pillhurst. During Mr. Matthews absence Clyde R. Webber a well known local newspaper man will handle Tribune advertising.
Arthur M. Alford of Hudson was arrested after Nellie Ruth Hopack's mother accused him of perjury in obtaining a license to marry Hopack. He swore the bride was 18, but the mother says she is 17, and the license was issued days ago.
Dr. G. Stanley Hall urged modern schools to abandon rigid methods and pursue generic teaching focusing on natural child development. He defined music as the language of the heart and cautioned against teaching notes before songs, praising folk songs and warning that college glee club polly wally doodle singing marks degeneration.
Mrs Wilson Turner of West Gree ley entertained a few friends at a birthday dinner Wednesday afternoon July 12. The table was decorated with sweet peas and covers were laid for Mrs D Forward Mrs Dr Draper Mrs Chandler Mrs Dickerman Mrs Miner Mrs Glazier and Mr and Mrs Young. A pleasant time is reported by all those present.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Collison were outbound travelers this morning with Mr. Collison to handle business in Denver and Mrs. Collison proceeding to Limon Colorado to visit her parents briefly.
Miss Nellie Stone, an outgoing passenger, departed this morning for Denver after visiting here with Mrs. Q N Stone.
Chautauqua audience enjoyed a visit to the Panama Canal, receiving a vivid account and demonstrations last night. The program featured vivid storytelling and a well received presentation that drew community interest and praise.
The Chicago Operatic Company will close the Chau tauqua season with two concerts as record crowds are expected. The program includes a Fisher Shipp prelude and two Chicago Opera concerts Friday and Saturday.
