The Labor Department said wholesale prices rose in June with meat, poultry, and processed meats showing gains while overall unemployment edged down. The Wholesale Price Index climbed 3.0 percent from a year ago, driven by energy, meats, leather, and other goods amid Nixon phase two wage controls.
Wheat export estimates for 1971-72 rose above USDA forecasts, with total shipments near 620 million bushels and a projected all-wheat production around 156 billion. Carryovers exceed 900 million, while 1972 crop outlook remains uncertain amid large global supplies and Soviet demand shifts.
Florence Gaffney, a school bus driver and homemaker, has driven a truck from Atlanta to Neptune and a travel trailer from Bangor, joining male drivers with support from Coast Cities Coaches. She learned to switch to auxiliary tanks with help from a man truck driver and notes female drivers are treated with consideration.
The Agriculture Department announced four additional beef liver samples tested positive for DES the cancer causing growth hormone raising tainted carcass counts to four out of about 2 000 animals examined this year. The four livers came from steers in California Kansas Texas and a dairy cow in Ohio.
The Colorado Board of Social Services approved changes to raise wages for 1,900 of the state’s 2,445 county welfare employees, cutting five pay plan options to four. The move creates a five percent increase funded by $220,000 from state and federal sources plus $40,000 from county funds, lifting many workers from the lowest pay grade.
Oregon Idaho and Wyoming farmers fight grasshoppers to curb a potential large infestation. Aerial spraying covered 145 000 acres in Eastern Oregon and 688 000 more across counties, with plans to treat up to 89 000 more acres in Idaho and additional work in Wyoming. Experts cite last year’s late spray and eggs still in the ground as key concerns.
Insect Report by Charles Urano notes heavy corn smut in west Gilcrest fields with pockets of infestation, Elm leaf beetle and larva on elms, not linked to Dutch elm disease. Light trap shows Sugar beet webworm, potato adult emergence, and many green peach aphids in west Greeley Gilcrest Briggsdale and Ault as regular control efforts continue.
