Shawsheen Marker Unveiling After July 4 Parade

A large historical marker at Islami Grove Park entrance on 4th Ave will be unveiled after the July 4 parade. The marker recounts Shawsheen’s rescue from burning and later aid to Greeley residents during the White River massacre Meeker. Hazel E. Johnson will present a historical review, with brief remarks by Mayor Gordon Trissler as the Greeley Community Activities Band provides music.

Sir Winston Churchill, five days after breaking a thigh bone, sat up in his Middlesex Hospital bed propped by pillows and reading the newspaper as Lady Churchill visited. The 37 year old statesman continued to show resilience while resting after surgery and injury.

City Library to Close Early Tonight and July Fourth

The Greeley Public Library will close at 6 p.m. tonight and will remain closed on July 4. It will resume its usual schedule on Thursday.

Dr. Walter J. Wilkinson Dies at 70 in La Salle

Dr. Walter J. Wilkinson, longtime La Salle physician and veteran, died Tuesday at Weld County General Hospital on the eve of his 71st birthday. Born 1891 near Montezuma Iowa, he practiced in Colorado since 1923 and delivered about 2000 babies in La Salle. He served in World War I, led Weld County Medical Society, and held public service roles in La Salle including school trustee and town board member. His two sons John W. and Walter L. Jr. were killed in a 1950 plane crash near Camp George West. their mother Adelaide Hibbs Wilkinson died months later.

Funeral services set for La Salle church Saturday morning

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 am at La Salle First Presbyterian Church. Military interment will follow at Grove Cemetery with Victor Candlin Vos No 38 of the American Legion in charge. Wreckage of a twin engine military Cessna 3104 reported missing April 28 was found in White River National Forest near Meeker Colorado. Barricades Erected for Razing Jobs at Greeley Building

Workmen from Perimiuller Wrecking and Jobbing Co. began erecting barricades and a walkway in front of the Greeley Building and Post Office to prepare for demolition. Interior wrecking has been underway at the old Post Office for three weeks, with demolition of the Greeley Building slated to start July 6. A steel ball on a crane will demolish exterior walls, traffic will be reduced to one southbound lane, and barricades will extend along Bh Ave between specified alleys. Joe Perlmutter said peep holes will let sidewalk superintendents monitor wrecking activities.
