Lamm supports local control on hollow-point ammo

New well curtailment plan targets Conejos and Rio Grande

The State Division of Water Resources proposes limiting agricultural wells on the Conejos and Rio Grande to protect senior surface water rights. The phased cutback starts two days weekly in 1975, rising to six days in 1989, with full cutoff from 1980 onward unless users adopt replacement programs. San Luis Valley potato growers protest, seeking a meeting with Gov. Lamm to oppose the plan. Arkansas River plan also faces protests.

Weld County plans jail complex and youth service reform

County officials discussed the new $10.6 million jail sheriff's building about to begin with cash flow concerns and no bond issue planned. A separate study urged a 48 hour juvenile holding facility and expanded youth programs to reduce duplications across health and social services.

Five more die in crashes raise toll for year

The Associated Press reports five highway deaths in separate crashes, bringing the year total to 26, up from 25 at this time last year. Victims include Juan Rojas Banvelos, 39, of Denver, killed while crossing Washington Street. his body hurled 142 feet by a car driven by Joe Perez Jr., 31. Also killed were Sandra Lee Nelson, 23, of Grand Junction, in a Grand Avenue crash. Sabrina Gross, 4, of Hudson, pinned beneath a car after a rollover on Adams County Road 33. James Franklin Sunderman, 27, of Colorado Springs, in a collision on a local road. and Norman Lynn Grade, 30, of Thornton, in a two-car crash on Interstate 25 in Adams County.

Senate panel weighs water data rule for subdivisions

A Senate agriculture committee review centers on Senate Bill 7 by Sen. Fred Anderson to require county commissioners examining rural subdivision proposals to obtain water data from the state engineer for study. The bill would amend SB 45, with Kadlecek backing it to strengthen county planning but face objections over workload shifting to the engineer. Inflation also touches farming, as a Cai farm goats sale in Ithaca sees 21 goats average 760 dollars, female goat at 2250 dollars, with California and Texas among buyers.
