Ault January 9 with all bills paid and a balance in the treasury the Ault Congregational church reported an unusually good financial condition at its annual meeting. Reports from the women s department Sunday school and other branches showed progress and flourishing work. Officers elected J H Cherry trustee H W Kirby deacon C A Brayton clerk and B A Wilkins treasurer changes in the heating plant were ordered for greater efficiency. A good attendance noted.
Washington January 9. The Payne Aldrich tariff hearing on earthen and glassware schedule opened amid talks of trusts domestic and foreign. Chairman Underwood voiced satisfaction with pottery industry competition, while glass interests denied trusts, yet warned tariffs must block foreign capital from invading the U S market.
Local men seeking work in operating irrigating canals are invited to meet G. J. Williams of the reclamation service at the Commercial Club tomorrow. A telegram notes Williams will arrive tonight or be available all day, to process applications. Past years have seen local workers move to Montana and other states for such positions. The government values the district’s experience and aims to hire them.
Fort Lupton residents await a new pool hall with W N Peckham announcing plans to open as soon as the final ordinance passes Friday night. Meanwhile four other license holders hunt for suitable locations. Mayor Hill skated at the municipal pond in Ault marking a rare eight year return to the ice as local crowds enjoy the rink.

Greeley residents are invited to a free mock trial at the Sterling theater tonight after 7 30. The event features music moving pictures and a court room setup with judges editors and local officials as participants. No tickets required and admission is open to all including farmers.
The farmers institute heard J W Martin discuss pea profits and soil benefits. Luther Burbank announced a new pea variety developed for the Empson company with planting planned for 1913 and a predicted net profit of 30 to 50 dollars per acre, Weld growers reporting up to 80 dollars in 1912.
Alfred Hiles Bergen, billed as America’s greatest baritone, missed some altitude related vocal power at the Sterling theater concert by the Leon Marx trio, but his tones remained beautiful and simple pieces suited him well. The Marx violin, Dressel cello, and Schuchard piano gave refined interpretations, with MacDowell’s concerto opening a polished program. The show, second in the Redpath Shalwy lyceum course, drew praise for artistry and skill, though many patrons stayed away.
Frieda Robinson a 14 year old girl of 625 Fourth street and Harold English age 10 of 1625 Eighth avenue won first and second prizes in a letter writing contest held by the paper and the Orpheum theater management. Prizes include a three month and a one month Orpheum admission ticket respectively for letters about a film shown at a free Christmas Eve matinee.
At a farmers institute session in Weld County experts discuss potato blight affecting Colorado and national crops. Dr. C A Lory calls for a government funded experimental station with state and federal aid while Insinger proposes a bill to authorize county or legislative funding.
