In Denver the House debated a revived bill to permit branch banks. Rep. Sack proposed an amendment linking branch banking to counties with 75 000 plus population and two branches per bank. The measure failed on a strong House vote.

Two people died in separate crashes on Thursday. William Lee Idler, 63, of Fruita, died after colliding with a parked car. an autopsy was planned. In Grand Junction a 17-year-old, William Joseph Gannon, was killed when his car crashed head on and was thrown from the vehicle.

In the University of Colorado runoff for student body president Dennis Mateski 21 from Wheat Ridge proposes abolishing student government and letting students decide fee spending via IBM cards. He polled 1 000 in the primary while Paul Boettcher pre med from Evanston Ill led the liberal slate with 1 771 votes. The runoff will be held Tuesday and Wednesday between Mateski campaigning as a conservative and Boettcher leading the New Direction Coalition.

Pilot dies after plane crashes in Pueblo
Jess C. Boysen, 24, a Pueblo resident formerly of Brownwood Texas, died at Parkview Hospital after a single-engine plane crashed during practice landings near the west boundary of Pueblo Memorial Airport. The aircraft, owned by Pueblo Aircraft Service, hit 300 yards short of the runway, bounced, and flipped onto its top. Boysen died at 7:50 p.m. from massive injuries. This was the airport’s first major accident and fatality since opening in World War II.

Ben Black Elk, known as the most photographed Indian and nicknamed The Fifth Face on Mount Rushmore, died at age 74 in Pine Ridge. Born in 1899 at Manderson on the Pine Ridge Reservation, he was related to Chief Crazy Horse and linked to Little Big Horn lore.
