The Estes trial jury process stalls as hundreds are examined and questioned. Sheriff deputies hunt for fresh venire members while lawyers fight for challenges. Meanwhile Camerons return from Los Angeles with relatives aiding Captain Truby in recovery. Dr. Dana Sniff visits in Los Angeles.
A group of twenty five young men could not decide how to spend five dollars for a treat so they unanimously voted to give the money to Captain Marpurg of the Salvation Army. John B Gullbrandt recently married and moved into a new home. Friends visited the couple with an old fashioned charivar, and the groom distributed five dollars for candy cigars ice cream and beer. The act gained approval from those present.
A man was struck in the right temple by a blow and found near a railroad track in Greenly after inspecting a load of potatoes from Idaho with partner Fred James. He received several stitches and could not recall how long he lay there. investigators found a bloodstained scene but no other loot or suspects.
The patronees of the library hosted a social gathering at the home of Mrs Meadames. John Neel Eaton presided as host as details of the event and pantomime were discussed. Fifty attendees were present for the wedding themed occasion.
Washington reports another investigation into the agriculture department over Secretary Wilson and Solicitor McCabe. The probe follows claims that Florida Everglade land promoters influenced officials and suppressed reports on drainage lands.
In Ault on February 8 the Dan Naffzigger home in the north part of town burned to the ground with contents. A small group of boys spotted the blaze and raised the alarm as the aged owner had recently left for Kansas. The fire caused about $500 in loss with partial coverage.
Six candidates were initiated into the 1. 0. 0. F lodge here Tuesday night. The lodge now has 53 members and Lesley Clancy is noble grand. The Milliken band has reorganized with J. K. Elliott as leader and will soon give a benefit ball.
The Greeley Club held its annual meeting and elected directors Charles E. Clark Paul Darrow C H Rea Harry Farr H D Parker J G Harris and Henry McGill. The board will organize and select officers with two members absent. Eight members attended Wednesday night services at the S W church and twelve accessions were recorded. Rev J R Lynn and family plan to move into the Gill parsonage March 1.
About 250 people attend the Fort Lupton dairy association meeting with delegates from Platteville Hudson and Brighton. Frank Wheeler speaks on the condensary from the patron viewpoint and Paul Maris offers sanitation tips. A February 22 program features Gilbert Landell on the manager’s view.
Former Colorado state treasurer and Redmen official John Holmberg stopped in La Salle yesterday to visit old friend George Briggs. Holmberg now lives on a ranch near Jackson Lake in Morgan County.
The Union Pacific Railroad will transport a car of coal free from the mines to Nunn to aid homesteaders in need. J Smith Johnson provides coal at cost, minimizing expense. The coal is consigned to Mrs. Dr. Parker at Nunn, arrival expected early next week as the Sterling theater benefit concert funds the relief effort. The concert at 3 o clock features Mendelssohn Wedding March, Serenade, Poets and Peasant Overture, and other selections to raise money for the coal already ordered.
Erie Feb 8 The Erie Commercial Club and the Farmers Union held a joint meeting at the Camfield school house with about 100 members to promote cooperation. Leaders urged farmers and merchants to work as equals, plan future gatherings, and oppose tariff removal on sugar tungsten and related commodities.
A letter from a Nunn area homesteader describes dire winter conditions. The writer, 61, relies on a pension and cow stock for income while awaiting coal fuel, asking for assistance from the Philharmonic orchestra initiative. He notes health issues and difficulty obtaining cash to prove up his claim.
Johnstown observes Dairy Day as an annual holiday with speeches at Lawrence hall. State Dairy Commissioner Cochran, Paul Maris, W. H. Barr, and Gilbert Landell attend along with other experts. Morning features include dairy cow judging and a big free dinner. The Johnstown band plans a grand ball at night.
Secretary of the Interior Fisher backs a bill to grant an extra homestead right to all settlers who have used their current rights. A conference with Acting Chairman E. T. Taylor of the public lands committee set in motion fast action with hopes for early committee approval. The measure would extend take up rights to anyone who has earned or forfeited a previous right and include irrigation project settlers receiving title soon.
Chicago prepares for a national Roosevelt conference on Saturday as Roosevelt supporters forecast a full campaign for the presidency. Edwin W. Sims says preparations are complete and the effort will proceed as if Roosevelt is a declared candidate.
