Navy reports attack by enemy submarines off Hawaii and near the California coast. A tanker was fired on but not sunk. casualties cited among crew elsewhere, with additional notes on Pacific theater activity and naval communiques.
Local forecast for 24 hours ends Monday shows a high of 41 and a low of 19. Colorado remains cloudy with snow in the western mountains and eastern talays, diminishing late this afternoon. Clearing tonight with colder conditions.
Reports recount several wartime incidents along the California coast. A U S tanker Sudto was shelled and sunk north of San Francisco, while tanker Agwiworkd was shelled but escaped. Freighter Sampa and tanker II faced attacks with varying outcomes. Lahaina was shelled and sunk near San Francisco with two dead and two missing. survivors reached an island coast.
Mossant, 29, of the Engla mine four miles east at Erie, was killed instantly when the conveyor belt crushed him at the surface. He died about 10 minutes after the accident. Survived by his wife, they lived at the mine. Reg Falke Ekbland will conduct the funeral service at 6:30 AM at the Evangelical Free church in Eaton. Anyone wishing to attend is welcome.
Charles Ford, aged 93, longtime resident of Greeley and LaGrange, died Monday morning after a heart ailment. Born Feb 25, 1848 in Delaware, he lived in Missouri, Cheyenne, Denver, and Windsor before settling in LaGrange 40 years ago. He authored a 30 page reminiscence and was a longtime Odd Fellows member. Survived by daughter Mrs V V McLain. body sent to Macy’s mortuary.
A heavy snowstorm blankets northern Colorado causing drifts four to five feet in Well County and about 10 inches in Greeley by 2 p.m. The storm brings slow traffic, auto chain shortages, and several minor accidents with no serious injuries reported. The Union Pacific passenger train from the Pacific coast arrives late into Greeley after a five hour delay. The weather, with winds rising Monday afternoon, continues into the morning as counties report travel advisories and cautious driving conditions.
Denver radio dispatch reports the Colorado Supreme Court ordered reinstatement of three Boys Industrial School at Golden employees after the state civil service commission approved their discharge. The court ruled firing certified staff requires a hearing on charges, reversing the school board of control action. The three reinstated are A B Lortman, W A Hopkins, and A S Thoman Sheppinton. Jeff erson County district court ruling affirmed with no dissents.
Colorado beet growers estimate the 1942 crop will bring around 8.50 dollars per ton if government ceilings hold. Analysts forecast roughly 8.41 to 8.50 per ton, with regional totals varying by production and sugar content. Growers question whether price ceilings can be maintained.
A Denver street tram derailed near Colfax and Toplar injuring seven passengers and trapping others. Eight dozen Lowry Field workers aided in rescue while police extricated the wounded. Paul C Hatfield of Greeley was killed when a car driven by his father Howell Hatfield hit a bridge near Bolvue Kansas. His mother Alice suffered injuries. two younger brothers were unhurt. The 31 year old worked as a tramman for Wells Blolor Company in Denver. The family had traveled from Pierce to visit relatives in Kentucky. Funeral plans were not yet announced.
The senior high drama class play The Lone Tome Folk scheduled for Monday night at 8 o'clock has been postponed to 2 p.m. Tuesday due to the storm. Admission is free. Story on Page 1.
Greelay public schools will close Wednesday for Christmas vacation and reopen January. St Peter's School already began holidays with last classes Friday. Catholic rites in Denver for Installation of Bishop will delay St Peter's return until January 7.
A censored wartime summary claims 80,000 Japanese troops with heavy escorts attacked Luzon and advances pressed toward Ipoh from the Malay Peninsula. The British resistance was reported along a line near Singapore as Japanese forces crossed the peninsula and pushed toward key strategic locations.
Archival note: Bud Pence, once of Greeley, Navy crew on the Oklahoma, reported missing after its Japanese attack near Pearl Harbor December 7. Earlier telegrams suggested he was safe. Father Major B Pence formerly of Ault, and Sylvia Archibald Pence in California. Archibald Pence enlisted in the Navy last November at Salt Lake City.
The War Department in Washington estimates 80,000 to 100,000 Japanese troops in six to eight divisions taking part in a new invasion of Luzon in the Philippines. A communiqué describes heavy fighting on Lingayen Gulf as ships transport barges to shore and Philippine and American forces mount a stubborn defense along the beach.

Washington December 22 The war department announced that Walter Auuyat Jannson of 807 Sixteenth Street Graelsy Cole and Ronald Victor Kramer of Brighton California have accepted commissions as lieutenants in the air reserve.
A series of offshore explosions shaken Berlin and inland areas of Maryland and Delaware on December 22. Residents including Henry Burback, a Berlin gas owner, reported windows rattling as blasts occurred between early morning hours and continued for over an hour. Coast guard and Army officials at Fort Miles and Fort Saulsbury said they heard the detonations with no fortifications being tested.
Police Chief G U Hunter warned auto owners in the Iustnese area to remove cars from streets on Monday and Tuesday nights to aid snow removal. Cars left on the streets will be towed away at the owner's expense.
