Denver public school teachers defeated a plan to restore a 2.7 percent pay hike while Boulder Valley teachers won a pay raise. Colorado Springs voters narrowly approved a 14.0 million revenue bond for three new schools and district improvements, with about 14 percent turnout.
Denver AP reports State Rep. Phil Massari a Trinidad Democrat may not continue as both legislator and Las Animas District Court probation officer. A 1970 Supreme Court rule barred court employees from holding political office, impacting his positions.
The Colorado Joint Budget Committee opened five days of hearings on next year’s spending and was asked for a 20 million hike for the Department of Institutions. Director Hilbert Schauer said the request includes planning for a regional jail system to house inmates serving misdemeanors and non-violent offenders. Also, South Africa announced a new safety rule requiring two way radios on all aircraft, including gliders, from January 1, 1973.
In Aurora Colorado a Christmas tree at Lowry Air Force Base displays silver bracelets bearing the names of prisoners of war or missing in action. Erected by two widows, Mrs. Sylvia Jefferson and Mrs. Cheryl Danielson, the tree honors missing husbands Capt. Perry H. Jefferson and Capt. Mark Danielson from Vietnam. Mrs. Jefferson notes about 80 Colorado servicemen are prisoners or missing and may not return home for Christmas.
Casper AP reports Wyoming sheep ranchers scoff at Eastern claims. John Burke of the Wyoming Wool Growers Assn cites a caller who warned producers of veal, clarifying that veal comes from cattle. Burke describes proposed enclosures to keep sheep and coyotes apart in Natrona County amid predator concerns.
Pitkin County may seek a court injunction against Gunnison County to stop the Marble ski area from dumping treated sewage into Carbonate Creek. The plan switch from a polishing pond to a direct pipe discharge drew county opposition, with officials urging standards meeting Pitkin County rules while state officials push toward stricter effluent standards. Vatican City reference appears incidental.
Santa Fe District Court Judge Edwin Felter dismissed the Santa Fe County Grand Jury and withheld release of its narrative report. The judge said the report, about a study of the El Vido drug rehabilitation program in Santa Fe, goes beyond the grand jury's function and is sequestered until further court order. Felter praised the jurors for their diligence.
