The Senate Post Office and Civil Service Committee approved a bill to raise federal government pay by about 4 percent for employees earning less than ten thousand dollars a year. Chairman Gale W. McGee of Wyoming backed the proposal as part of broader government pay increases.
Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, the assassin of Senator Kennedy, is said to be on a hunger strike at San Quentin Prison since November 28 in protest of confinement conditions and what he calls cruel treatment on death row. Warden James Park reported Sirhan subsists on cocoa and coffee and remains in relatively good spirits but angry at the administration.
Otis Park, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, urges a new Congress to curb federal spending and roll back government programs.
