A northeast snowstorm blankets Greeley and Weld County after flurries, bringing deep snow that delights farmers and prompts sledding. The eastern Nebraska blizzard pattern drives the system, blanketing the region.
Reports from Weld County describe a northeast snowstorm starting yesterday with four inches on the ground. The light, powdery snow brings wind and no outlook for clearing, delaying beet hauling originally set to begin later this week.
At Windsor Windsor, Dec. 3 five inches of snow have fallen and kept snowing through the night. The storm comes almost from the northeast and there is little prospect of clearing weather.
At Fort Lupton on December 3 a winter storm broke over the town driving wind and snow from the north. Residents reported icy roads and reduced visibility as officials warned travelers to seek shelter and remaining daylight hours.
John Hartman pleaded guilty to robbery in Justice Hill's court at Kersey and was bound over to the district court. Miss Delia Erickson, E. E. Behring, and J. Lillard testified as Hartman took $126 in currency and checks from the Behring store before a posse captured him. Hartman cited hunger as his motive for the crime.
Despite poor weather and competing events the Orpheum drew a good crowd for an excellent show. The La Vallieres, vaudeville artists of first class, delivered a top sketch regarded as second to none and the management is pleased to have secured them for this city engagement.
Governor Shafroth and Senator W. L. Clayton will represent Colorado at the Western Traffic association meeting in Denver next week. The discussion will cover western railroad rates and related questions to be raised with all roads.
Residents in Ault report a timely storm leaving about four inches of snow with continued prospects of more. Farmers express happiness over the moisture benefits to crops and pastures, noting the relief after a dry spell.
Snow began last night around 8 o clock and continued through today. No wind, storm from the northeast. About four inches of snow have fallen, leaving farmers pleased with the precipitation.
Washington reports the Uncompahgre valley project in Colorado is 54.8 percent complete. November weather facilitated canal work as 110 workers and six teams operated on enlargements for the Montrose and Delta canal, with about three miles added. Water was shut from the Montrose Delta canal on November 1 and the Louiseheizer canal on November 15 for repairs and clearing work.
Canon City reports plans for one of the west’s largest irrigation projects to reclaim 200000 acres in Pueblo and Fremont counties. Eight million dollars will fund construction managed by Canon City Florence and Pueblo Water Co and Colorado and Southern Irrigation Co, with offices opened at 611 612 Main Street.
Promoter G F Dreamfield of Denver leads a fish catching scheme at Empire reservoir in Weld County. Two tons of fish were drawn in a single haul and nearly a ton daily is shipped to Denver from Green City at one dollar per hundred pounds. The venture inspires talks of incorporating a company to catch and dispose of fish with leases likely to extend to other reservoirs. Crowds gather for net haulings as demand from Denver and other cities grows.
LaGrange Country Club held an all day gathering at Mrs. E H Brown's home chaired by hostess Mrs. Mark Andrews. Members prepared articles on bread pickles and meats with samples shared and a midday luncheon praised as a fine edibles collection. The next meeting will be with Mrs T H Robinson.
Neighbors and friends surprised S N Jones at his home 1315 Sixth Avenue on Thursday evening to celebrate his birthday. The gathering included games and refreshments, with all reporting a jolly time.
A packed Greeley Opera House welcomed the Apollo club of Denver with soloist Mrs Bessie Dade Hughes and the local Fortnightly club. The concert showcased strong training under Professor J C Wilcox, with lauded solo and duet performances and enthusiastic audience appreciation.
Postmaster D. E. Gray reports November stamp receipts at $2,600, about $350 above November 1908. If December keeps the pace, receipts may reach $3,900, suggesting rising population and stronger public spending on postage.
Work on the Empire reservoir is well under way in Green City. Pile driving excavating and laying pipes average 6000 pounds draw many onlookers. Three valves weigh eight to nine thousand pounds each and attract kodak fiends to the site.
J. C. Deichert was sentenced this morning to eighteen months to two years in the penitentiary after he was accused of burglarizing a house near Windsor.
Mrs. A. R. Fuller, a respected Windsor artist, will move to Denver to open a new studio. She departed Thursday with many friends in Windsor wishing her success. her son Emmett Fuller edits the Windsor Optimist.
W. W. Hall accused of a statutory crime against Jeannette Dudley of Cheyenne was sentenced this morning to the reformatory by Judge Garrigues. Both Hall and the girl testified on the witness stand.
Harold R Knight of St Louis tours the county with Missouri capitalists eyeing a tramway linking Denver and Greeley. He hints at buying out another group negotiating the road. Knight visits to assess the field for the proposed interurban line.
Mr Knight declaring an interurban trolley would benefit Greeley, countering claims of harm and citing Boulder and other cities as examples. He expects the line to arrive within two years and plans to study the Denver to Boulder run before continuing his trip.
Application and petition in county court seek letters of administration for the estate of John Yates who died November 24. The estate is about 1200 dollars. Eldest son Thomas Yates is named as likely administrator. Attorney James W. Gault handles the matter. Mr Yates was a well known pioneer around Eaton.
The United States deploys naval forces to both coasts of Central America to protect Americans in Nicaragua. Troopship Prairie sails with 700 marines for Panama and possibly Nicaragua. Des Moines Tacoma Yorktown Vicksburg and Princeton shields at Corinto Port Limon and Costa Rica. Rear Admiral Kimball to command with flag officer sent. Zelaya allegedly plans to resign while keeping power through Jose Madriz. Albert Walters of Evans visited town.
A husky man was arrested last night by Patrolmen Brown and Langer as he panhandled in front of the Armory during the Catholic fair. He was detained at the city jail.
Miss Helen Phillips departed Wednesday for Nashville Tennessee to spend several weeks visiting relatives and see family.
J. O. A. Carper of Denver B. D. Sanborn of Greeley and Murdo McKenzie of Trinidad depart Denver for Chicago to meet Governor Shafroth and seek a Monday audience with the Western Passenger association. They will present plans for lower tourist and homeseekers rates for Colorado as part of a committee seeking state rail rate relief.
The Ladies' Aid bazaar and oyster supper at the Swedish Lutheran church drew a modest crowd due to bad weather yet raised 90 dollars for church work. Auctioned fancy work items and an oyster supper fed attendees. The young ladies society plans another bazaar in February.
Leo Vincent will hereafter have charge of the Clayton Investment Company and act as manager. The investment company is to be completely segregated from the lumber company and its purpose is to build and improve the north side of the city.
