John Bowers sells a quarter section of land in Olive Branch district for 3600 dollars. Purchaser is F G Jacobson who lives near Pierce. A second sale closes for two sections of raw land at 4590 dollars to the Purcell Land Investment Company of Greenley.
Households in Greel bought so called mountain perch for Sunday dinners only to discover odd odors and dubious origins. Officials report the fish vendor supplied the unusual stock while the city matters office seeks more details. The incident draws city marshals to question the seller about the fish’s habits and identity.
The Weld County Farm, Evans publication, is sold by John K. Mallionee to C. P Martin. The paper will become LaSalle based and serve the growing community with a debt page each week.
J M Cunningham was arraigned in police court on a drunkenness charge after his Saturday night arrest by Officer Brown. He remained undecided on a plea and was given until 4 this afternoon to enter one.
The Denver Iron Workers beat the Greeley Grays 19 to 6 in a game that stayed close through four innings. Greeley showed strong hitting but errors and late rallies by Iron Workers decided the outcome. Notable: Lindemeyer hit, Sullens allowed five runs, Wigton and Birkendahl pitched, attendance 706.
Several immigrants appeared in Weid County District Court to complete final naturalization under the new law. Names mentioned include Carl Buxman, Thomas Wilson, Wilhelm Anderson, Otto Johnson, Yens Yensen, James Mel O Neugh, and Oncar Norberg, with years in the United States ranging from eight to twenty-four. Some had taken first papers and were voting, while others completed final proceedings.
Judge George H Bradfield, back from a two week trip through Missouri and Kansas, reports severe drought conditions. He notes burned parched fields and a prairie fire like scene in those states and says Colorado’s agricultural districts will benefit from higher profits as livestock feeders seek wintering options. He mentions temperatures near 100 in Kansas City and comments Missouri’s cool areas are only in the mountains. Mr and Mrs H F Brownell and children return from a Denver visit, with business in Routt county and relatives seen in Denver.
Tom Jones of near Johnstown was thrown from his horse into an irrigation ditch and drowned this morning. The coroner was notified with few details. Jones ranch lies one mile east and two miles north of Johnstown. This marks Weld County’s tenth drowning death since June, with Fred Phenix the previous victim.
The death of six year old Oaitd Blanche Miller daughter of Mr and Mrs Frana Miller was reported at Weld County Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 o clock Tuesday morning at the parental residence 1228 Seventh avenue.
A ground breaking scene occurred Monday in G1onday as the Union Pacific depot crew joined local workmen to lay the switch tracks on the branch. Depot work will be pushed to finish within thirty days with weighing cases for the potato commission and preparations under way for several store buildings.
In a Sunday morning ceremony at Trinity Episcopal church Miss Jessie V. Dennis and Co. J. Deweh wed. Officiant Rev. B. W. Bowell presided over a simple double ring service with bridesmaid Myrtle English and best man Phil P. Whipple. A wedding dinner followed at the Hanegen home. Chewell is city editor of the Republican.
Monday work at Inland Grove park prepared the Weld County fair grounds for the opening on Wednesday. Horsemen cattlemen and grounds crews moved plants and stalls into place as judges were announced including George Golding Prof G E Morton Prof Bennett and others with a women’s exhibit judge to be named. Sieneshows and a Gentry Brothers dog and pony act are slated for Saturday at the fairgrounds with rail lines noted to continue coverage.
Speakers at the county fair salute domestic crops and urge exhibitors to enter their best oats wheat and barley. With opening Wednesday, organizers warn that this is the last chance to get in exhibits and to avoid arguing about superiority.
Special to the Tribune Eaton August 0 Two youngsters from prominent Eaton families were injured late last week. One child, a four year old, suffered a broken collarbone when a horse stepped on his foot in his father’s barn. The other, Ruth Trenhoulme, lost a window of luck after a wagon fall left her with a broken collarbone. Master Gordon Wison, son of Mr and Mrs T K Wilson, was also involved in the mishap while inspecting a horse.
Special to the Daily Tribune Severance August 30 The unfortunate lineman killed at Lafayette Saturday was H H Wolcott son in law of Mr and Mrs John Mullen ranchers near Severance The Mullens learned of the tragedy and left for Lafayette A press dispatch says Wolcott climbed a tree to loosen a wire and received 2300 volts of electricity and died instantly The Wolcott family had children and Mrs Mullen plans to bring his wife home on her return.
The Eaton public grade schools opened with Sophia Vogelar and Etta Gross leading first and second grades. Augu sta Nettleton and Doherty head third and fourth grades, Isabel Wilson and Alma Midgette handle fifth and sixth, Florence thingtone and Jane Twomey supervise seventh and eighth, with Florence Marron and Denver in charge of music and art. High school start delayed ten days. faculty includes Bertha Brooks, Carrie Clark, Faith Skinner, and H K Black as principal. Enrollment figures unavailable at noon, but expected to rise. Eaton ranks third in the county behind Greeley and Windsor.
In August the city saw rapid progress on several major structures. The Catholic and Christian churches are nearing roof completion, the Camfield hotel addition is under cover, and interior work will begin soon. The trust building at Seventh Street and Eighth Avenues has foundation walls ready for masons with concrete walls. the Opera House project is advancing with first story ironwork in place, signaling a future mason demand.
Hen ry Horst rancher near Loveland loses horse after a traveler asks for lunch while driving from Estes Park. Witnesses spot the thief with the horse multiple times but assume Horst sold it. The man, described in detail, camps at Ault and later heads toward Grover as officers close the net. Horst, father-in-law of C F Myers, assists in the hunt. authorities expect capture soon.
The training department of the State Normal school for grades one through eight will open Tuesday morning September 7. New students who have not attended the Normal training department should apply to the secretary of Normal as early as possible for entrance. The Normal and High school departments will open Tuesday September 14.
Mr. and Mrs. E. Iverson of Chicago visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Lowe near Greeley. The Chicago merchant was surprised by the farming country and left Saturday for home while Mrs. Iverson extended her stay after touring Yellowstone Park en route home.
Sunday evening union meeting of young people societies at the Methodist church planned a devotional service and business session to organize welcomes and care for Normal students. A central committee will arrange a census and church receptions likely for the last of September.
A party of Denver Laramie officials and eastern capitalists left Greeley by two autos early Monday morning to inspect Milliken on the proposed Denver Laramie Northwest railroad route. They visited the Commercial Club office before departing.
Papers filed in district court allege Earl Laird assaulted Ernest McCory with a revolver. Laird appeared before Justice J. P. O Connor in Windsor, bound over to the November term under a $1,000 bond.
Tomato Day at Fort Lupton featured half mile dashes won by Nameless and Sandy with owners and riders listed. Cow pony race results noted, along with no tomato fight despite reports. Fort Lupton’s ball game vs Den ver’s Co. L drew big crowds. Lupton won 16 to 6. Canning factories run full tilt with 250 acres of sweet corn prepared.
