Washington reports senator Edwin C. Johnson says Colorado National Guard units will be called into federal service on September 1. He cites telegrams from Coloradans seeking family allowances as hearings on related legislation proceed. Guard strength is roughly 6,000 with no full division, while two regimental combat teams were called up earlier in August.
Dr Moore welcomed over 1 000 children entering the Greeley public schools for the 1960 51 term in a general welcome. He spoke of back to school meaning differently to various ages from seniors to junior high students and new movers. The schools aim to meet youth needs and interests with an inclusive program.

Nine year old Thawan Sullivan of Eaton Route Two was hit by a car driven by Anderson Walter Anderson on a dirt road near the Sullivan residence. He was taken to Wald County Public hospital with severe head injuries and skull fracture. State patrol says he crossed the road when struck and rolled 100 feet, car skidded 140 feet after brakes were applied. Patrolman reports ongoing condition is serious.
The body of 17 year old Christopher Smith Reynolda, heir to the Reynolda estate, was found on Mt Whitney about 200 feet from the summit. He and a companion reportedly died during a climb and the body was lowered to the 11 000 foot level by ropes. A sheriff's posse was to remove it from the rugged terrain the next day.
Fifth Air Force pilots report a massive air strike over a 26 square mile Korean target north of Wonsan. B 29 bombers dropped 70 tons at 7,000 feet, with waves of eight planes, while flak remained minimal and enemy troops appeared stunned. Lt. Beadley radios small arms fire from hillside, as planes exit toward the Naktong region.
A U S air force report says 1,000 tons of bombs were dropped by B-29s on communist forces northwest of Waegwan along the Naktong River. About 101 B-29s participated, releasing 40 600-pound bombs each as Reds retreated in panic. The strike aimed to break a 60,000-man offensive buildup and saturated a 26-square mile area. Observers noted Reds fled toward the hills in terror, some discarding rifles and packs as ground forces pressed the retreat. The field battle quieted afterward with limited local skirmishing along the front.
The College of Education at Colorado State University will hold graduation ceremonies Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Garden Theater. Degrees will total 436, including 242 masters, 179 bachelor arts degrees with teaching certificates, 10 liberal arts bachelors, two bachelor of music, and nine Doctor of Education. Names span many cities including Denver, Greely, Normal, Taunton, Vermillion, and Rangoon, with graduates listed from numerous states and some overseas. Continued on Page 41.
Washington reports a House committee debated discharging servicemen with three or more dependents. Chairman Wrooks and others favored discharge for men with three or more dependents, arguing for family support linkage. Ident Trumanara backed broader consideration of dependents in discharge decisions.
The House approved a bill to restore city mail delivery to two daily runs by ordering the post office to undo an April 17 order reducing city home deliveries and curtailing rural routes. The roll call was 264 to 108. A Senate committee backed a companion measure, but President Truman was not expected to sign. The bill would let cabinet officers seek extra funds if needed to resume services.
Washington reports Major General Lewis B. Hershey, head of the selective service, foresees additional draft calls in coming months. He says calls could exceed 35,000 beyond the 100,000 already set for September and October, with estimates suggesting around 185,000 for the current fiscal year though based on July figures. He testified before the appropriation committee that further funds are requested to support a larger draft schedule into November and beyond.
Washington reports Defense Secretary Johnson announced the U S will accept Thailand 4000 troop offer for the United Nations force in Korea. The announcement came during a conference with Thai ambassador Wan Walthayakon who was said to have requested placement of Thai troops in Korea under UN command.
City council votes to hold a public hearing on rent decontrol under the federal act. City attorney to draft notice and advertising for the hearing in Greeley on Tuesday Aug 2. Action signed by 113 rental-property owners in the city. Governor to review after hearing.
City council discusses state highway plan to add a service road west of the Algaih avenue freeway from West to Second streets. The move aims to boost traffic safety and access for commercial areas, with legal and contractual interpretations debated by the council and city attorney.
