A farmer in the Greeley district may win a $1000 Tiffany trophy from W K Kellogg for the best ear of corn entered in any class at the National Corn Exposition in Omaha. Judges will select the top ear, bringing honor to the grower, state, and county.
Fred Phenix an 18 year old son of Mr and Mrs V Phenix drowned Tuesday evening in the Poudre river near the Howard bridge. He and Elmer Howard had gone to swim in shallow water but Fred struggled and sank as neither could swim. Despite efforts by two physicians no heart action was found and he died after an hour of resuscitation attempts. The Phenix family moved to Greeley a year ago and Fred was active in the Methodist choir. Funeral arrangements were not yet made.
The LaSalle building boom continues as Gene Smith erects a cottage for rent and railroad workers consider new homes. P. W. Hughes plans a residence and store in one building, with goods arriving midweek. David Stewart and Geo Parks announce homes, while Mrs. L. H. Oney travels to Montrose to visit Mrs. Flower.
A former council granted an alley crossing bridge to one landowner upon bond to cover damages. The Silver State canning factory at Fort Lupton runs day and night, producing 20000 cans of beans daily. Barwise Company matches output and also operates around the clock to clear beans before tomato season. It seems beans may last until early September, a note from the old Ute stamping ground.
After two lengthy sessions aldermen fail to decide if the approval of a south alley bridge for the Opera House was legal. Attorney Tew argues the council must rule. City Attorney Ewing says current council cannot review past actions. If legal, city bears damages. if illegal, Opera House liable. Continued on Page Two.
A skeleton found in a lonelyMountain gulch near Coalina California is suspected to be Will Selwood son of Mrs B M Wilson of 667 Seventh Street Greeley. Mrs Wilson believes the missing youth died in the mountains but brother Charles Selwood doubts the identification. A letter found with the remains was written and signed by Mrs Wilson but not addressed to her son.
Mr. Olin arrived in Greeley and, with Real Estate and Commercial club leaders, planned to rally state real estate men to mobilize farmers for the corn exposition. He aims to gather barley data and samples from southeastern county areas and exhibit prize winners at the Interstate Fair to showcase Colorado to the nation.
At Tuesday's meeting the council considered a Greeley band petition requesting $250 to offset a $305 deficit. Another request sought more bandstand access. The panel sent the matter to the judiciary committee along with a petition for an orc lamp at Ninth avenue and Tenth streets. An electric railway franchise protest from Eighth avenue property owners was also referred.
