Reports from the official news agency describe German air and ground advances in the Sie canal region and near Kiev with heavy Axis bombardments and claims of Rom advanced positions. Cairo and London dispatches note continued German operations along the Lovat and of a siege around Khmol and Ber Leerhoy as Moscow fronts shift.
Unverified reports say German forces threaten Moscow from southeast toward Smolensk, with Nazi dispatches claiming progress in the Smolensk region and walls of the Ukrainian frontier. Moscow asserts Red Army countermeasures while Axis advances press toward Leningrad and Pskov corridors.
Richardson of Coto Deavey rejects a proposed $4000 yearly salary raise for officers, citing that the state must pay based on rank and military service. He says the Attorney General’s guidance relieves the state of extra raises and expects activation for active duty.
The Silt Lake and the Northampton, not sister ships but similar in design, are in the South Seas refueling at an Australian port en route to Singapore. Salt Lake City features ten 8-inch rifles in four turrets, while Northampton carries nine 6-inch rifles in three turrets. both carry aircraft and twin catapults. Jack Simpson, 19, son of Mr and Mrs Bisa Slangsu, suffered three broken vertebrae and concussion when his pickup rolled over after veering off Highway 4 near Yuma. He was treated at Yuma hospital where doctors listed possible paralysis but said recovery is likely though long. Simpson had been employed by a Greely creamery and was en route to Conk, Nebraska.
County Agent L. Wy Payne announced an Early Potato Field Day in the Gilcrest area on Aug. 6 starting at 2 PM. Growers invited to inspect a seed plate of 100 varieties including Buy-Yanks Chippewas Warlaa and threshedlings from Pleasant Valley. The program will cover insect problems and fertilizer plot results at nearby sites.
Monday night traffic incident near the Junior high school involved a car owned by C F Jones at 543 Fourteenth Avenue driven by Mrs Mabel Jones age 49 colliding with two parked vehicles owned by Vern Sleynman at 102 Moniview Bud and Bowel Cuthertson at 1410 Peartcentl Street. One person sustained injuries and Mrs Jones received a ticket for reckless driving.
Courtesy patrol reported a Sunday incident east of GM where a vehicle failed to curve and rolled over in a borrow pit. Damages were estimated at $125. No injuries noted.
The senate completed action on legislation to defer men 28 years old or older and provide for release from current service in that age group. A Colonel and his 48 year old wife Louise Wolfe and their daughter were found dead from bullet wounds near Fort Warren Wyoming. The bodies were discovered by a coworker and a coroner said the deaths resulted from a 48 caliber revolver. The investigation continues as authorities seek motive and suspect leads.
