Black recruiting gains boost South Guard numbers
The Pentagon reports the National Guard and reserve forces added over 600 Black members in the past year, with the South showing the strongest gains. As of June 30, 1971, Black membership stood at 23 213 in guards and reserves, about 2 5 percent of one million reserves. Louisiana nearly doubled to 277, Mississippi rose to 17, South Carolina reached 48, while Illinois added 109, reflecting cautious progress in diversifying the ranks nationwide.

Denver Patrolman Guilty of Vehicular Homicide
Ted M. Smaith a Denver patrolman was found guilty of vehicular homicide for the Christmas day death of Joseph Patice.
