Denver AP report says if Colorado House Judiciary Committee fails to resolve calls to reinstate the death penalty, chairman Ron Strahle may refer the issue to the public for a statewide vote.
Miss America Terry Anne Meeuwsen condemned Gloria Steinem's "meat packing contest" remark at Fort Collins Colorado while defending her swimsuit choice. Steinem had called the Miss America pageant a meat packing contest, prompting Meeuwsen to retort about braless women and the swimsuit competition.
Snow slides blocked several Colorado passes from heavy snow pack and warm temps. Monarch Pass and Red Mountain Pass between Quray and Silverton were closed in the afternoon and evening. Vail Pass and Battle Mountain near Minturn saw slides blocking traffic briefly before all passes reopened by nightfall, authorities said.
Denver AP report notes the second phase of a $5.9 million microwave system near Denver is finished, linking Denver with Iola Hot Springs Central City and Georgetown and expanding to Granby. The line uses radiating antennas at mile intervals to relay calls replacing the aging weather-prone network and adds growth and TV transmission to major ski areas. The first leg linked Denver with Iola Hot Springs Central City and Georgetown at $1.7 million, while the second leg extended the Denver Grand Junction Craig loop. Growth in Steamboat Springs was highlighted.
A federal official warns Colorado's snowpack is extremely heavy but runoff risk remains limited. Near Gypsum Linda May Whittington 21 of Idaho Falls died after her car was hit head on and pushed off the road. she was pinned in wreckage. The state reports raise Colorado 1973 highway fatalities to 163 with last year on the same date at 212.
