Local soldier Lt Monfort reported killed in action over Germany
The family of Second Lieutenant Richard Lee Monfort of Greeley Colorado received official telegrams confirming his death in action over Germany on January 28. Monfort was 21, a Flying Fortress navigator, and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Colorado State College of Education before enlisting in December 1942. Surviving are his wife Viola, his parents, a younger brother and several other relatives. Monfort was active in agriculture and 4-H, previously winning cattle show championships at the Colorado State Fair. The Monfort family has long resided in the Greeley area where his family operates a farm and stock business.
