President Johnson announced a sweeping study aimed at ending the military draft. He said the study would lead to the climination of conscription within the next decade.
Three multi car crashes and a costly concrete mixing truck overturn injured three people, one possibly with a brain concussion, at 4 a.m. on 18th Ave and 7th St. The truck from Greeley Transit Mix, laden with 22 tons of concrete, spilled damage totaling about $10,000 to the truck and $100 to a lawn. Police, ambulance, and fire units responded. a large wrecker towed the vehicle away.

Weld County superintendent Paul Lodwick refused to recognize the appointment of Mycin G. Martinson to the Red School Board serving La Salle Gilcrest and Platteville. The action followed advice from the district attorney and cited the School District Organization Act. Martinson was appointed April 9 to fill a vacancy caused by Kenneth Salter's resignation. The board must vote a majority of its remaining members to fill vacancies, per the law.
A Caravelle jetliner from Beirut to Dhahran and then toward the Persian Gulf crashed offshore near Bahrain during a sandstorm. The plane carried 49 Americans among 105 aboard and rescuers reported no survivors as search efforts continued.
Great Western announces plans to build a large sugar beet processing factory in Maine under its supervision. The plant aims to process the first harvest in fall 1966, with 30,000 to 35,000 acres planted in spring. The project, supported by Greater Presque Isle Development Corporation, is expected to add about 8.5 million dollars to Maine’s economy over three years and will involve Alvin C. Robertson overseeing beet growing.

Weld County Republicans plan a combined state convention and assembly in May. The event, scheduled for May 23 on 8th Ave, follows a trend set by the state GOP to hold both gatherings together, amid evolving calendars and weather considerations.
The VFW marble tournament will be held Sunday at the post grounds with four entrants in the competition. Randall is chairman. three winners will receive prizes and the top two advance to the district tournament at Lafayette on April 26. The district winner goes to the state tournament in Denver on May 17. Refreshments will be served to competitors.
