An open letter from leading cement pipe manufacturers critiques the city engineer’s report on cement tile for sewers and drainage. Bartlett Lumber Co filed a petition seeking an ordinance amendment to allow cement sewer pipe competition, opposing the glazed pipe requirement tied to a Denver monopoly.
City Engineer O F Shattuck urges continued use of vitrified glazed tile over uncertain cement concrete for sewer construction in Greeley Colorado. He warns of failures from alkaline exposure and urges testing and standard composition to resist deterioration. A rebuttal letter questions cited cases and cites independent engineers noting few failures from alkali in the region.
Zita, a farming town along the Union Pacific between Denver and Cheyenne, prepares a Monday sale of town lots as a real estate office opens under Will Lowry of Ault. Newcomers expect rapid growth similar to nearby towns, with the Crown Creek branch nearing Zita and soil of proven value. Mrs. A F Sutton traveled to Denver for Sunday.
A Tribune report from Platteville notes a large bridge crew over the Platte three miles northwest of Platteville and graders at work along the grade north of Platteville. A contractor says orders push his outfit east of Hillsboro toward Greeley. Tracks reach seventeen miles north of Denver and rails are due within three weeks. T. C. Ashby departs for Los Angeles after a year in Greenny with daughters Mrs. Monroe Shepherd and Miss Carrie Ashby.
Peter Brown of Peter Brown & Son suggests a Vancouver City method for street designation. He notes cement street corners stamped with the street number and suffixes Ave and St. as a durable, readable solution versus elevated metal plates.
Officer Brown arrested two disorderly individuals, a woman named Helen Haines and a man named Tom Jones. The woman arrived from Boulder with a battered companion. the man followed, kidnapped the captive’s claimed wife, and both were detained. The woman remains in county jail and Jones in custody awaiting transfer.
Three concrete firms are laying cement sidewalks with at least a month of work ahead. From half a mile three years ago to over seven miles at the start of the year, the city expects at least five miles more this year. An example at Thirteenth Street and Tenth Avenue shows footprints on fresh steps, while another contractor orders street name dies for learners. The Tribune notes talk of repealing the ordinance requiring property owners to pay for grades.
Promoters in town show a new fence method using a dry battery to repel animals near the Vance livery stable. Horses fail to reach corn beyond the wires. mules endure a single shock. Builders claim batteries last a year, but readers doubt such a quick verdict. Caution urged before wide adoption.
Two Eaton youths with sports careers hit by injuries this week. Julius Murphy, a top high school athlete, crushed arm bone while vaulting and misses spring meet. Jay Charlesworth, sugar factory employee and Kansas arrival, fractures shoulder from a fall from a horse.
The first meeting of the town trustees after the election elected H. P. Hill as clerk police magistrate and justice of the peace J. F. Morford as marshal Dr. W. F. Spaulding as health officer D. M. Decamp as treasurer and J. H. Howe as mayor pro tem. Committees on finance printing streets and alleys ditches building and light judiciary and fire department were appointed and Ordinance No 26 on street grades was referred to the judiciary. Ordinances Nos 27 28 and other duties were presented with action to suspend rules and adopt them.
Miss Angie Pierson of Peckham won the silver medal in the Demorest contest held Friday night at Peckham. Contenders included Irene Pumphrey Gilcrest Laura Sorenson Big Bend Grace Ellis LaSalle Leona Smith LaSalle Helen Lamma LaSalle. A large crowd attended as recitations and local musical numbers entertained.
Ault hosts a crowded return by the Old Maids Convention from Seattle. President Mrs Gale leads, with secretary Mrs Woland and treasurer Mrs Dinsmore. Members include Pence Greer Mead Harris Hasbrouck Poe McCain Milley Darner Westfall Andrews Wyatt Bozarth McIntyre Bridges and Miss Mabel Padgett. The captured men Were Howett Hasbrouck Rist and Heaton. The event, under Christ Church Ladies Aid, cleared a large sum.
Arbor Day brought a day of baseball across the country with LaSalle as a focal point. LaSalle’s two teams won their games, the Evans nine losing to LaSalle 44 to 6 in the younger match, and the older boys’ contest ending 4 to 0 in favor of LaSalle. Earlier, Evans defeated Big Bend 22 to 12 at Big Bend.
Charles Worsfold uses the nearby hills stone to build a granary workshop and chicken house on his Beebe Draw ranch. Beebe Draw sits near plentiful building material with at least four nearby houses built from the same stone.
Voters consider marshal and street supervisor races while waterworks and city attorney posts draw contenders. Eugene Williams and Dave Camp vie for marshal, Milt Seaman for street supervisor, Fred Dresser and Jesse Nolin lead waterworks, and Todd or Joseph C. Ebw ing seek city attorney. Government eyes open lands in Weld County with possible mineral value reviews and fraud probe rumors.
About 13 dollars was cleared at the entertainment held at the Fairplay schoolhouse Friday night. During the day pupils and teachers planted large trees and an excursion into the surrounding country marked Arbor Day. The exercises were moved to evening with an admission charge and a comedy Our Awful Aunt presented to an appreciative audience with special music by Olga Dahlgren and Rose Dean.
Decker of the Oklahoma City Produce Company, president of the firm, visited Eaton on Friday to attend to business in town. He dined with Ben Middleton and Mrs Rebecca Middleton. With warm weather, streets fill with youths testing throwing arms as the season begins. The first local pickup game is at Kersey tomorrow afternoon with Billie Williams leading a team from here.
