The infant son of Mr and Mrs George Batt ranchers near Peckham died after a colt kicked him in the yard on Wednesday afternoon. The playful child was near several others inside a corral when the colt struck with full force. The community mourns this accident believed to be a random caprice of the gentle animal.
The Batts, Russians, with four other children, faced the death of a child whose neck was broken by hoofs. Coroner Macy conducted a quick inquiry, ruling no inquest needed as parents ceased efforts to revive the child. Funeral arrangements not yet set.

Fifty four men of C Company National Guard Ault attended the annual inspection Wednesday night with Gen Cc A Kelly praising the turnout as the best of the year. Capt Gale and company received praise for appearance drill and shooting, raising their record from 29 to 79 percent. A stag dinner at Hotel DeWitt followed the crowding armory event with guests including Major Hearn Capt Tanner Ft Russel Capt Drake Greeley Judge Bradfield and Senator Carpenter.
Citizens retired to the hotel for an evening under the hotel manager's supervision with Captain Gale as toastmaster. Gov. The state board of land commissioners heard bids on Estes Park lands including an eighty acre parcel for a cottage by Estes Park Electric Light and Power. The $10 per acre bid was refused as too low, with sale planned at $1 per acre upon new valuation. Local ladies raised $48 from a chicken pie dinner for the church and the organization plans a church edifice seating about 200 once built.
Mrs. Minta Strong, who came west about a month ago and stayed at cousin Riley Anderson's ranch, died Wednesday. Her body was taken to Chattanooga Tennessee. In advanced tuberculosis upon arrival, Colorado offered no benefit. Her husband accompanied the remains to the southern home. Mrs. Strong, 29, was loved by the few Colorado acquaintances.
Gov. Shafroth approved house bill No. 159 enabling Colorado irrigation districts to bond unpatented lands for water supply. The law grants eminent domain powers to condemn lands needed for efficient irrigation and extends district reach to desert and homestead claims adjacent to districts, including two Weld County districts.
About two thousand head of sheep went out Monday owned by J. M. Collins and Karl Bros. The flock was killed in Chicago, but Collins may stop at Omaha.
The Mayher lumber yard office was broken into last night but nothing of value was taken. A back door glass pane was smashed and a search for money yielded nothing. The repeated break ins match a pattern as the town, with limited police, attracts camping workers and few nights officers.
