Beet Planting Delayed by Weather and Labor Movements

Beet planting is delayed in much of the county until next week per Smith manager of the Great Western Greeley and Eaton factories. Some fields may be planted by Saturday if weather allows. About 700 acres were planted before the Easter snowstorm, with moisture-rich soil, but fertilizer spreading and plowing are hampered by breakdowns and clearing conditions. Segmented seed accounts for about 20 percent of sowing, aiding faster, more uniform germination and enabling certain workers, including some POWs, to perform tasks more efficiently. Acreage signed for work in Greeley and Eaton areas runs around 16,000 acres, with expected final acreage near 22,500 to 23,000. Mexican nationals are arriving for seasonal labor, with training planned from Laredo, El Paso and Nogales and housing in Eaton dormitories. Northern Weld County Seed Potato Growers Association has filed for 160 POWs to assist this season. Eaton grain shipments will draw from a Nebraska camp rather than Greeley.
