A Galigorutan who served as political commissar for the Washington and Lincoln battalions arrived in France with a stark tale of death among American volunteers in Spain. John G. Honeycombe of Los Angeles said only a few hundred of thousands who fought since the war began remain alive, describing the near wiping of the Washington battalion near Belehte and Zarra-sosa as insurgents pressed toward the sea.
