Moses E. Smith Dies Saturday

Moses E. Smith 68 longtime Denver mint superintendent and former Weld County legislator died after a heart attack at the Denver club yesterday. He served 12 years in the state legislature, was speaker of the house, and helped promote major Colorado projects and water rights. Survivors include his wife and four children. Arrangements pending.

Wheeler and Murphy Plan 3 Million Boulder Development

Wheeler and Murphy, led by John R. Wheeler and C. Howard Murphy, announce a 3 million project near the Denver Boulder turnpike. They acquire 272 acres from Bauldia Mancheldl to build about 1001 two and three bedroom homes now with 230 more later as demand grows. Boulder planning has approved the subdivision plat and the city council will consider it on April 15.

Cargo Plane Crashes in Queens Killing Five

A twin engine cargo plane crashed into densely populated Queens near Jamaica, setting stores and homes ablaze and killing five people including a police inspector. Eyewitnesses reported the plane dove from a rain-dark sky and exploded upon impact, with fires spreading through several blocks and cars overturned.

Two Air Force Planes Clash Near Mobile Killing Fifteen

In Mobile Alabama two Air Force transports collided in flight, killing fifteen of the sixteen aboard. One dead was aboard a C-124 Globemaster with capacity for 200 troops, while nine others were crew and passengers on a C-47. Both planes were based at Brookley Air Force Base.

Denver April 5 1952 Mrs Marcella Christensen Crowther of Sanford was named Colorado mother of the year by the American Mothers Committee chairwoman Mrs William Molt. The 62 year old mother of eight was praised as the ideal American mother reflecting spirituality love and devotion and influence in her community county and state.

Western Union Embargo Lifted After Brief Shutdown

Denver reports the Western Union embargo easing to an emergency operation. Twelve employees staged a one day standstill, halting message relay with 39 other major cities. About 400 leased wires remained open for essential and official business. Messages from outside the 40 cities were to be relayed by telephone.

Stan Beson Named New Jaycee Director

Stan Beson was appointed to the Junior Chamber of Commerce board of directors by President Jack Redas, replacing Kenny Keppler who moved to Long Beach. Beson, active in Jaycee work, has served on the board ten years and leads extension and civic improvement efforts. Keppler received an outstanding service certificate for his continuous efforts. Gas Shows At Pure Oil Tom Paay Wildcat Site

Gas shows were reported in Pure Oil’s Tom Paay wildcat north of Riverside reservoir in the Pierre shale at depths between 1,491 and 1,880 feet. Tests by Ansbale Drillion Company indicate drilling progress with pumping and choke changes affecting output. Other nearby wells and operators, including Sterling Oil and Taon OL, reported drilling at various depths with potential ties to Muddy formation and related field activity in Weld Morgan and surrounding counties.

Tornado Toll in Deep South Rises to Seven

A series of violent storms struck the Deep South with four tornadoes tearing through Louisiana Alabama and northwest Florida. Seven people died and about 65 were injured as the damage topped one million dollars across multiple states.

Seattle Dr J DeForest Cline Dies at 83

Dr J DeForest Cline retired Seattle physician and longtime Colorado State music educator died after a long career. He taught at Colorado State University for 24 years and directed annual Meadahl program. He held B M and MM from University of Rochester and studied at Columbia. Survived by wife and daughter Pegsy Arandadt in Seattle.

Charles Warren Critically Injured in Highway Crash Near Greeley

Charles L. Warren 87, longtime GM Elevator manager, was critically injured in a one car crash 10 miles northeast of Greeley on Friday evening. He suffered a leg fracture, severe head injuries, and shock. surgery was not possible. He was taken by ambulance to Weld County Public Hospital and remained in very poor condition Saturday morning.

Fred Ward Jury 5 Finally Chosen in Denver Case

Missing in Korean War Lt Van Fleet Jr Son of General

Lt James A Van Fleet Jr pilot and son of U S Eighth Army commander was listed missing in action after a night bombing mission near Sunchon North Korea. The 26 year old West Point graduate and B 25 crew included Lt John A McAllister and Ralph L Phelps. Relatives in Long Beach California were notified as hundreds of airmen searched the area.
