In Lone Tree district the Killhams and Coopers confront a kidnapping case after a 14 year old girl and Will Cooper reportedly fled. Authorities recovered the couple on an evening train and warrants were issued. Longstanding farm disputes and horse ownership figures into the tense affair.
Colorado ranchers report higher lamb prices and improved cash flow as they sell lambs earlier in the season. W Bostrum of Greeley notes feed costs driven by strong prices. some operators reduced head, others profited as cattle prices lagged. Senator Drake, who bought breeding stock last fall, anticipates gains despite prior losses while many producers regret underfunding feedlots.
The Kersey Commercial Club held its regular meeting Friday night with good attendance. Officers chosen were B. P. Brooks president, W. R. Reeves vice president, and H. P. Hill secretary. Committees were appointed to pursue town prosperity initiatives.
Mrs. M. B. Andrews, who has taught the Wentz school four miles south of Beebe Draw, resigns due to ill health. Miss Gauss will finish the term as Andrews recovers at her home near Farmers Spur with only three weeks left in the district.
The Eaton accident victim Charles Wilson, 20, who fell from a train after missing a ladder, confirms his parents live in Lander Wyoming. Blood poisoning has set in and doctors say amputation would not help. he cannot live more than a few days.
J Intow died this morning in his Smith building room after a lingering illness. He is survived by his wife and one child. The Intows recently relocated here and the husband had been ill since their arrival. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
The Methodists held their greatest banquet Friday evening with a polished program. Miss Marion Van Dyne led, Ernest Tuck spoke on Purpose and Will, and a debate argued that small wrongs can aid a greater good. The evening featured songs, poems, and an all French menu served by the Ladies’ Aid.
Denver attorney Churchill reports the Burlington Interurban has injunctionly defeated the Union Pacific in a suit moved from here to federal court. The high court grants the Interurban right of way and requires UP to modify its grade. Crossing is in Crow Creek district four miles east of Lucerne. UP seeks a 3 foot fill while Interurban requests a 2 foot cut. Court may settle if no amicable agreement is reached.
The Greeley Poudre irrigation district holds today’s election for officers and directors. Three sections vote to elect a director each. Charles Tew and other promoters have prepared after a week of district investigations for the large project. No opposition is expected and only a few votes will be cast.
Sol J Cutler aged 45 and Mrs Eben L Madden aged 40, both of Platteville, obtained a marriage license.
In Kersey a political clash unfolds as Fred James and L Niner contest the mayor's seat. The Independent ticket heeded by Niner was ruled illegal while the Citizens party remains the official field. Voters head to the polls on Tuesday amid party tensions and questions over red tape.
Voters are reminded of polling place changes for the upcoming election. Booths will be at Mansion barn Ninth street and Seventh avenue Ward 2 City hall Precinct 7 Precinct 21 Greeley Steam Laundry 718 Seventh street Ward 3 Court house Precinct 43 South Ward school Twelfth street and Eleventh avenue.
William Sparks and N T Nelson, young brick contractor and sheep shearer, were fined $25 each plus costs for playing craps. They posted security to pay the fines within five months after a city jail risk and later pleaded guilty in the city hall to avoid imprisonment. Both men, sober and industrious, pledged to reform and settle within thirty days.
Mr and Mrs G R Lansdale formerly of Evans have moved after trips through Missouri and Arkansas selling property to relocate. A farewell reception marked friends in the community and their departure was regretted. They have returned and plan to stay.
Justice Edward D. Riker traveled from Johnstown to marry unwed teens Christina Loos and George W. Ambruster in Judge Bradfield's chambers. The couple, described as Russian field workers on John Hill's farm, faced a jail option but showed little concern for the outcome.
Mrs. D J March hosted a pleasant party in honor of her guest Miss Irene Holden of Denver. Fifteen young girls enjoyed a lively afternoon with bird themed decorations plus bird shaped cakes and candy eggs. The event ran from 8 to 5 with ample fun and games.
W. T. Graham of Omaha completed the Wyatt ranch transfer he arranged earlier. The original sale included $5,000 in cash, with Graham issuing nineteen mortgages today to David and D. B. Wyatt to secure the purchase. He plans to divide the property into small tracts for sale and works as a Canadian Pacific immigrant agent scouting homesteaders for the district.
The senate and house have passed most bills with Weld county tax and prize boosts tied to fairs. A defeated measure would have made Weld county a second class county. Other approvals include 100000 for a new Normal training school, 75000 for Gunnison Normal, 5000 for lantitoxin distribution, and 50000 for fair prizes with state match.
Friday evening party at the Wellington apartments greeted Nelson Demorest with a rapid turn from the Congregational church. A friendly crowd of about thirty appeared as three hundred in his mind, enjoying Welsh rarebit ice cream and cake, an impromptu musical program, and several fine recitations by Miss Dora Hamel.
A Friday evening concert at the Congregational church featuring Herbert Williams and associates drew praise as every number pleased. Violinist Miss Warren was absent, but Miss Thornburg and Miss Lewis filled in, leaving the audience satisfied and hoping for a repeat performance despite concurrent social events.
