A weather prank fooled many residents by making it seem warm and sunny but a stiff cold snap followed. A high school prankster trio baited a married man with a fake invitation to meet two women, prompting an office flight to Denver and a cautious getaway.
In Greeley dressed meats rise 0 to 40 percent over Saturday prices. Beef and pork costs climb amid shortages and weatherized cattle scarcity. Bacon up 2 cents, spring lamb from 20 to 40 cents. wholesale cuts increase with general meat shortages cited.
Following a yearly custom the Salvation Army observes Self Denial Week from March 3 to April 7. The effort aims to boost home and abroad work through special exercises and the Self Denial spirit. Donations may be sent to Capt. and Mrs. Albert E. Marpurg, 403 Ninth Avenue or to box Big in Greeley.
The English Collie named Shep belonging to 0 Ford in La Grange District was taken to a physician Sunday after a cow kicked him, breaking his leg. He is described as intelligent and is receiving careful treatment at the Ford ranch to avoid losing the valuable animal.
LaSalle which is temperance minded debates running Milliken saloon ads in the local paper. W C T U committees urge discontinuance while the editor defends ad space for legal business. Opponents threaten to stop paper if ads continue as other towns suppress liquor ads.
April 1 La alle reports a mail carrier named Edie endured a five mile runaway after a tumbleweed spooked his team. The cart swayed hard but stayed upright until crashing into a mailbox post. One horse was injured but expected to recover. Walter Simsey helped calm the team and operations resumed.
John Lawton, charged over a near race riot, appeared before Judge Long and was discharged after a lecture on the appearance of evil. The case involved high school boys and cadets in a fighting bout with two youths pleading guilty and fined.
A team drawing a heavy lumber wagon belonging to farmer John Teague ran loose in front of Longwith furniture store in Eaton on April 1. The wagon load whipped off one or two wheels as onlookers watched the spirited retreat down the street.
The Congregational church choir under J C Kendel will present The Lord of Light and Love cantata next Sunday evening. The 75 voice chorus and a quartet will sing the solo parts with special music at the morning service.
Juanita McGee a ten year old girl showed remarkable bravery Sunday after being thrown from a lively horse. She fell on the sidewalk but was not disconsolate and mounted the horse again to continue her ride.
Funeral services for Alonzo Leedom were held Sunday at 2:30 PM at the Christian church. Rev. J. L. Thompson pastor led the service as a large crowd attended and many floral arrangements were displayed.
H. J. Par ish, former Weld County commissioner for nine years, has returned to Johnstown after a three month stay in California.
R B Wallace of Omaha based Payne Investment company may establish a colony near here if a suitable land tract can be secured. Wallace, in Greeley for a few days, is hosted by Mr and Mrs T T Wilson. The firm has colonized land in Prowers County Colorado and in California. Wallace formerly co edited the Greeley Sun with Wilson and now publishes The Land Owner.
Churches must send Easter program announcements to the Tribune by Thursday evening for publication the following Saturday. The paper prints these programs free of charge if copy is legible and submitted on one side of the page.
Eugene H. Abbott a noted Union Colonist died Saturday in Greeley hospital after a recent operation. Born in Nicholsville New York 65 years ago he helped launch Morse code telegraphy then moved to Cheyenne and later to Greeley as Union Pacific agent and colonist leader. He served as town mayor and held Masonic Eastern Star Knights Templar titles. He leaves widow Marion Belle Getty son Prof Frank Abbott a scientist and university professor, plus siblings. Funeral services will be conducted by the Masons.
W. M. Boomer returned from a six week illness in New Orleans where he witnessed torrential rain. He described a five inch deluge over two hours and ten minutes with streets knee deep in water and boats used for transport.
Word has reached that Mrs Louise Webb Kunkel died Sunday at her Pueblo home. A Greeley resident in its early days, she arrived in 1877 with Rev B H Yerkes, who led the local Baptist church. Her funeral may be held in Fort Collins. she is survived by brother Arthur Webb, a Fort Collins banker.
Johnstown reports the pea acreage contract for Empson Canning factory of Longmont has reached 400 acres. The town gains a $15,000 hulling plant with peas supplied to growers at $3 a bushel and seeds paid at harvest. Early variety to be planted now, late by May 15 amid busy fields.
In Evans yesterday afternoon a temperance rally at the Reformed Presbyterian church raised 109 to support campaign expenses for the temperance cause. Speakers included Reverends Chase Berger of Greeley Rader of Denver and Richards of Evans. Rader urged conversion or opposition to ministers who sign petitions for saloons. Voters anticipate the election with excitement and temperance supporters feel certain of victory.
Kersey reports the first resumption of passenger service on the U P line since Friday morning. Two belated trains with thirteen passenger coaches pulled by two engines passed through town to Denver, while heavy rains caused washouts delaying traffic from the east. Several U P trains now run via Burlington and Hudson to Denver.
W O Rissman has bought the Rothenbach pool stock and will combine it with his existing hall in Kersey creating a single pool hall for the season.
Mrs. A. C. McCain of Ault was hospitalized Saturday in Denver with a severe stomach ailment.
April 1 report from Grover notes many homesteaders lack seed and face hardship after a hard winter. Weld County seeks data from Sedgwick and Union Pacific on seed aid practices. Sedgwick provides destitute homesteaders with 30 dollars worth of seed in exchange for road work, payment due by November 1.
Empson Canning company of Longmont will not solicit Windsor district this season for pea acreage. Farmers are in the fields and the company will wait until next year to obtain pea acreage, aiming to secure at least 500 acres in Windsor and surrounding areas for pea growing. Peas will be hulled in Windsor and shipped to the factory via the Colorado and Southern railway, with a hulling plant planned locally.
Rev D R Getchell brother of S L Getchell spoke at the Windsor Methodist church on Turkey. He has spent twelve years as a missionary and teacher there and detailed customs social and religious life. He plans to stay in Windsor and visit relatives and will address the Brotherhood in two weeks. his wife will speak to local missionary groups.
The Brotherhood meeting of the S. L. W. Church drew a large crowd Friday. Prof. C. L. Fitch of the State Agricultural College spoke on reports of recent potato experiments and how to improve the 1912 crop. The church choir hosted an oyster supper after, with proceeds to buy new hymn books.
Mr and Mrs Carson W Gilbert celebrate the arrival of a boy and girl this Sunday morning bringing their total children to five. The twins together weigh sixteen pounds and add to the family joy in their home.
Miss Rose Davidson, organizer for the W C T U, lectured at the Methodist church last night. The event drew a good crowd but little enthusiasm for forming a local W C T U.
Insurance adjusters arrive on April 1 to assess a fire loss at Hans Tuckson’s residence. The blaze Friday is believed arson as Chris Ginther who found the fire reports two men fleeing the scene.
Gill hosts a well attended athletic smoker with 56 passengers from Evans and Greeley. Matches feature Blumenthal versus Doke, Mondt versus Miller, Kinsinger against Doke, plus multiple boxing bouts. Amiel Ambrose refereed as Gill residents praised the program and urged another event despite the season closing.
Attorneys Delph E. Carpenter and Herbert Baker filed a brief in the Colorado Supreme Court challenging the 1879 and 1961 irrigation acts. They argue these acts give ditch appropriations priority over reservoir uses and claim no court can fix an irrigation season. The case involves High Line Ditch Company v Union Reservoir Company, from Boulder County. The brief also notes Carpenter authored the reservoir bill now pending referendum after a hard fight in the General Assembly.
LaSalle April 1 Farmers are burning weeds and preparing land for plowing as dry sections allow. Planting is expected to begin with beets by April 15 while fall wheat is reported in excellent condition. Many farmers bought strong teams this winter to work double shifts in the fields.
