Committee Reorganized to Curb Primary Bribery in county

The Republican County Committee met at the Grayson Hotel May 16 1908 to reorganize elect officers for four years and adopt rules to ban money and liquor from nominations. George W Castle became Chairman with G W E Wolfford Secretary and Robert Davis Treasurer. A three member rules committee was appointed to draft enforcement rules and ensure fair primaries.

Hardin Gilbert explains stay as Carter County schools head

Hardin Gilbert, superintendent of Carter County Schools, says he has not resigned and plans to visit Kansas with his wife while shipping household goods. He intends to return for June teacher examinations and to oversee the school office before considering retirement elsewhere. The note laments the normal school has closed and the town misses its pupils.

Ripley bound Nethercutt family stops in Kentucky for court house work

The note mentions Nethercutt and family leaving Tassday for Ripley West Virginia to be present for a court house project. A contract for steps and walks has been awarded to Sam Steele of Ashland. Local officials thank Pastor Yoak and Conley for building access. School add on starts next week and term begins soon. A strawberry market glut is forecast with berries in Virginia Delaware and New Jersey expected to be better and offered at five to six cents a quart in northern cities.

Aeolian Orchestra Delights Olive Hill Dance Crowd

Olive Hill enjoyed a big Friday night dance with the Aeolian Orchestra providing music. The event drew a pleased crowd and featured ads for weddingware from R M Bagby. Teachers’ certificate exams were held at the courthouse with 91 applicants and high praise for Grayson High School’s program.

Grayson community urged to beautify cemetery for Decoration Day

John B. Jacobs moved into a new home on Second Street this week. Mrs. Perry Calts of Olive Hill visited Elder Levi Canterberry’s family. A Grayson resident called for civic effort to clean and beautify the Grayson cemetery, sow grass, plant flowers, and maintain plots as a community duty.

Carter County School Census Totals 7930 Pupils

The census shows 95 white and 2 colored school districts. White pupils total 7889 with 4021 males and 3868 females. Colored pupils total 41 with 20 males and 21 females. Grand total 7930. Projected state aid at last year rate is 26 644.80 dollars.
