Coroner Thorne served as temporary governor last week. Democratic Congressfolk wary of Panama Canal vote amid popular support for construction.

John N. Hubbard bought timber from John Saulsberry formerly of the Jog house north of Hubbard's home. Erected in 1841 by John Trimble the house stood in an oak grove and was for years the county's stateliest residence. It later housed Judge J R Botts and Jonathan Davis with many notable visitors.
The Republican legislature praised Dr. W. C. Black of Knox county for party leadership. Black is son of John A. Black, the recent Republican candidate for Treasurer, and is described as a brilliant young man. Will Crawford is home visiting.
Two dec 1903 weddings are announced. William Rupert Jr and Dortha Blankenship wed in Ironton with Congregational officiant, after a secret Ashland meeting. Minnie Jones and John Theobald tied the knot at Catlettsburg with S D Boggs officiating, joining Grayson families and Theobald law associates.
O W Bellamy a Burlington Iowa locomotive fireman wrote of severe pain weakness and loss of appetite before taking Electric Bitters. He reports renewed strength and health after use declaring the product restored him to full vigor and recommends it with a 50 cent price and druggist guarantee.
A New Years ball was held by a group of young people at the Alpha venue. Attendees, local social circles, and organizers gathered for a festive evening likely featuring music and dancing. No further details available.

Obituary notes from Willard Lodge No 80 honor E E Salmons who died October 1 1903. The lodge records him as a worthy brother, a loving son and parent, and a valued community member with a page in memory set aside. Also reports a dislocated shoulder injury and relief from Chamberslain s Pain Balm sold by W A Horton and mentions Carter county printshop success in circuit clerk printing duties.
