Direct Selling Has Not Lowered Livestock Prices
The era 1924 to 1933 saw direct hog selling rise from 22.08% to 43.85% of the crop while packer margins stayed modest. Despite higher direct sales, hog producers did not see reduced returns as wholesale meat price levels reflected consumer purchasing power. In 1932–33 costs fell and margins narrowed, yet direct selling remained high. Over the past year livestock accounted for four of five packing profits, with payrolls and expenses consuming most of receipts, leaving only a small per pound profit. From 1925 to 193% the packing sector earned about 344% return on investment per USDA figures.
