A Washington delegation inspected the Philadelphia Liquor Commercial Alcohol plant with Polish scientist Waclaw Szukiewicz who outlined a process to convert grain into synthetic rubber. The plant uses 70 percent corn and 30 percent wheat, with plans to ramp up grain use to 100,000 bushels daily, yielding about 2.2 pounds of rubber per gallon of alcohol, at a cost near 22 cents per pound. The process promises faster production and less reliance on petroleum, with rubber matching European standards in quality.
