Lambert Hitchcock and the rise of a chair making legacy

Lambert Hitchcock, born in Cheshire, Connecticut, settled near Winsted in 1818 and founded a cabinet and chair factory that became the town’s leading industry. By 1821 Hitchcockville grew around the plant, shipping chair parts to the South before producing full chairs. His designs helped launch a distinctive rocking chair style later echoed by many makers. The chairs featured red and black finishes with gilt stenciling and decorative striping, marking a popular, durable furnishing type.

First Permanent Canadian Settlement Founded in 1605

The note recalls early attempts to establish colonies in what is now Canada after Cabot and Cartier discoveries. Monts and Champlain left Havre de Grace in 1604, selecting a first site by the St Croix river that failed. A 1605 Port Royal settlement followed, and Quebec City was founded by Champlain on July 3, 1608. Champlain, from Brouage, was a French explorer and son of a sea captain. The early settlers of Canada were French.
