Des Moines reports the death of W. Palmer a leading Iowa figure who died of pneumonia on the 3rd in Chicago where he had lived since retiring as public printer. Born Oct 11 1827 in Manchester Indiana he held multiple roles including state printer congressman from the capital district and editor in chief. He left sons Robert F. Palmer in Chicago and a daughter a Chicago High school teacher.
A man named Harry Jones, heavily intoxicated, reportedly planned to stay at the Van Winkles’ home the night of the murder. The spare bed was used, Jones is missing, and a posse hunts a heavily armed suspect as the sheriff maintains vigilance.
Harry Jones alias Walter Beatty, alleged murderer of Mr and Mrs Van Winkle, is captured in Coal Valley twelve miles east of Rock Island. He emerged from woods to a store post office, was seized by fifty armed men. Sheriff Benham identified him as the suspect, Jones denying the deed.
Iowa Agricultural College led the student judging contest at the international livestock show in Chicago on the 2nd. Iowa ranked first in overall general average, Ontario second, Missouri third, with Ohio fourth, Kansas fifth, Texas sixth, Washington seventh, and South Dakota eighth. Iowa retained the bronze trophy for horse judging while Ontario held the trophy for cattle sheep and swine. The schools now hold permanent possession of the statuettes. Iowa won three of the five Farmers Sons scholarships established by J Ogden Armour. Missouri or Ontario ineligible.
Local report states Pat Crowe was arrested on a formal charge of vagrancy in Bluffton alongside companions Arthur Leyla and Chris Peterson. Marie Goold sentenced to death by guillotine. Vere Goold to life imprisonment. The case involved dismemberment and concealment of the body in a trunk and valise.
Washington. The jury returned a not guilty verdict for Mrs Annie M Bradley charged with the murder of ex Senator Arthur Brown of Utah at a local hotel on December 8. The court thanked the jury and Mrs Bradley was discharged. A brief hotel incident in Pittsburgh closes the fragment.
Michigan officials moved to protect depositors after Chelsea Savings Bank in Detroit closed to prevent a run. State Banking Commissioner Zimmerman cited equal settlement risks and said the bank would not reopen Tuesday. Bank president Lt/ Treasurer Frank P. Glazier had about $684,000 of state funds on deposit. Attorney General Bird noted the state’s protection via the state treasurer’s bond of $160,000, shielding the state from loss unless assets pay 60 cents on the dollar.
In Carney Oklahoma five men reportedly roared into the Bank and used nitroglycerin to blast a coin safe early Thursday morning. They allegedly secured about $4,000 before escaping. Local authorities are investigating the break in and pursuing leads.
