Sergt Homer Givens an American soldier wounded in France lies in a hospital with 23 pieces of shrapnel eight drainage tubes in his body. Givens declined to return to America for recovery preferring to stay and fight. The Croix de Guerre was shown by Givens as he tells the story of the 2 August shelling in No Man's Land when he was left for dead but survived and was decorated by France.

British April casualties total 53,290 in war reports
London reports British casualty lists for April show 1,683 officers killed 4,841 wounded 2,459 missing plus 8,189 other ranks killed 35,304 wounded 814 missing totaling 53,290 nearly 2,000 daily. March casualties were 14,588 and February 19,492. It is believed the lists do not reflect the full German drive losses.

Fine and imprisonment for German plotters
In San Francisco on May 1 the court sentenced Franz Bopp former German consul general and E H von Schack former vice consul to two years in a federal penitentiary and fines of 10000 each for conspiring to foment rebellion against British rule in India. Judge Van Fleet denied new trials for the 29 defendants and urged stronger penalties as a deterrent.

Jail Bomb in Chicago County Jail Sparks Escape Attempt
A bomb explosion in the Chicago county jail injures several prisoners amid a jail delivery plot. Twenty inmates tried to escape before guards subdued them. The blast tore a hole in the north wall. 112 I W W members are among the prisoners on trial in federal court. No court session was held that afternoon. The explosive is reported to be nitroglycerine.
