New War Plant for Great Falls
Great Falls March 1 Work will start at the local smelter to produce ferro manganese. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co undertakes the project at the request of the War Industries Board to speed up steel production. The plant will use 250 tons of manganese ore from Butte copper mines and produce 90 tons daily, sufficient for 10,000 tons of steel daily. It will reduce the need to import ferro manganese by ship and save 100,000 tons of shipping yearly for food and ammunition to the war zone. The plant will be ready in five months.
