TOTAL ECLIPSE ON SCHEDULE TIME

Baker Oregon reports a total solar eclipse passing over a 50 mile wide northwest strip. Scientists prepared to observe the sun’s corona and spectrum as darkness briefly fell and lights came on. Observations were largely successful aside from a minor cloudiness.

Launching of 23 ships scheduled for July 4

Seattle and Pacific Northwest plan a Independence Day naval effort. Four steel ships to be launched in Seattle and about four in Portland, with Tacoma possibly launching one. Wooden shipyards pledge fourteen ships, as representatives of Emergency Fleet Corporation estimate.

Detroit to Deliver 19000 Liberty Motors by Sept 1 1918

John W. Staly of Detroit, president of the Reserve Bankers association, told a New York audience that despite extreme industrial difficulty, Detroit plants will deliver 19,000 Liberty motors on contract time by September 1 1918. He said there will be a delay in airplanes but Detroit will ship no fewer than 50 battleplanes daily within four months.

Submarine Losses Reported After Naval Conference

Senator C. A. Swanson announced after talks with navy heads that Allied and American forces have destroyed 60 percent of all German submarines built and that shipping losses have been reduced as a result.

Buy Your Coal Supply in June for Winter

The Fergus county fuel committee reports from state officials that June 3 to 10 is fuel week for ordering winter coal. Coal can be delivered by September 1, but no coal cars will move from September 1 to July 1919 except for war material. Coal price at mines reduced 10 cents per ton starting June 1.

U S Shipping Capacity Reaches 2,200,000 Tons

Washington June 1 United States now has 2 200 000 deadweight tons of shipping in transatlantic service including seized ships and bottoms chartered from Japan and others Representative Caldwell said the figure plus monthly production of 500 000 tons starting 1919, and 8 250 708 tons contracted in the last year, with shipyards employing 233 000 men.

Mayor J H Charters proclaims Friday June 28 1918 as War Savings Day. Citizens urged to devote the afternoon after 2 PM to subscribing for War Savings Stamps and promoting their sale. All able residents should pledge to save and invest to the limit allowed by law.

Bishop Condemns League in New Pamphlet

Right Rev. Vincent Webbe, Catholic bishop of Bismarck diocese, has prepared a pamphlet on political questions condemning the Nonpartisan League as socialist and a menace to the state. He discusses Christian states philosophy reviews proposed state constitutional amendments and town aims at length. He says the pamphlet is not for any party but to guide citizens in duties.
