State appoints new bacteriologist and health survey head

Dr. E. D. Hitchcock, a navy veteran and Bremer ton navy yards veteran, arrives as state bacteriologist succeeding the late Dr. A. H. McCray who died of spotted fever. Capt. Millard Knowlton of the U S public health service also arrives to aid the social health survey of Montana. He will assist Frank O'Donnell, head of social hygiene, as meetings are planned across the state.

Mining activity rises in Lump Gulch district

In the Lump Gulch area between Clancy and Helena, mining work increases as electric hoists and wiring go in at Liver pool while crews retimber the Little Nell shaft. Helena operators at Free Coinage and Muskegon hire 27 men, linking lines to Liverpool line and adding electric gear. Ruby ore from Legal Tender ships to Anaconda, with shipments valued from 3000 to 4600 dollars per car and about 126 dollars per ton. The district sees more mines active this season than in years.

At Big Timber on Friday Mr Miller sold 3,803 acres for 60,308 dollars. The offered tract totaled 4,043 acres, with a higher selling proportion than Livingston’s record. One Big Timber tract fetched 41 dollars per acre.
