The Bronze and the Human Heart
A town named for a self serving founder, Joel Hollingsworth, hides a tale of charity and ambition. Edgar Walker, a poor youth, overhears a plea outside the institute gates and offers a single dollar, an act that contrasts with a widow mother and daughter who recall a bronze heart as a foil to true generosity. The story traces the founder’s statue, a fortune spent or given away, and a man torn between wealth and humane acts.
