Penobscot Mine Owner Nate Vestal Dies in California

Nate Vestal, Montana pioneer and financier behind the Penobscot gold mine at Marysville, dies in Oakland. He funded the Drum Summon mine early on, helped other mines near Helena, and built wealth from Penobscot’s vast bullion output of 54,262.62 dollars from a single massive bar. The Penobscot produced about 1,230,000 dollars in total before changing hands to Snowdrift and Penobscot Consolidated Mining Co. Vestal’s fortune waned although he remained influential in mining circles until his later years in California.

May mean a railroad for the North Country

Montana might get the first aid from a five million dollar federal finance plan once authorized by Congress. Opheim banker S. H. Derrig and Galata editor J. A. McAdoo showed interest and said a full feasibility study would be conducted.
