New Year's Eve Prohibition Question Split in Montana
The Montana attorney general has not issued an opinion on when the prohibition law takes effect. Some argue the act becomes effective at midnight December 30, 1918, while others expect it to begin at midnight December 31, 1918. The issue hinges on the phrasing on and after versus from and after the date and whether fractions of a day are possible.
