Spokane cattle yards push Montana stock to forefront

John H. Roberts of Spokane’s Union Stock Yards says Montana ranchers are shipping more cattle to Spokane. He predicts 1918 will surpass 1916 receipts with about 2,000 cars. Sheep and hogs rise, 35 cars sold in one day, and Armour and Swift entering the market signal a growing packing industry with small shippers gaining access to strong buyers.

A Montana farmer extols Marquis wheat, claiming it yields 80 bushels per acre in high elevations, grows 10 to 20 days earlier than Defiance, and stands taller than kherson oats. Developed in Ottawa Canada, Marquis is crossbred from early red fire, early India, and Calcutta wheats. It is sold by seedmen and valued for irrigated and dry land production.
